I watched the quarter final at Mexico 1986 as a 7 year old, on a small black and white TV. I remember the feeling of disbelief and the unfairness of the handball goal but I remember more the sense of wonder as he took on what seemed like the whole England team to score what may be the best individually goal of all time. The balance and the speed of thought is incredible. I loved the small movement to his right to fox Shilton and put the ball in the net. That was a beautiful moment, never to be forgotten and it’s the possibility of such moments that make us addicted to watching what is not always a beautiful game. A flawed genius, of course, but what a player. RIP

A bit like yourself Hugo 🙂 You're clearly still bitter about a handball in 1986. Argentina hated us because of the Falklands, and who could blame them, it was beat us at all costs, they did, and went onto win the World Cup. Diego Maradona also liked a line, again so what, plenty of others do to. He had flaws, again so many other mavericks and geniuses in their fields do, it's what makes them who they are. Diego Maradona was a great, and for me the greatest of them all. Actually, the handball thing was quite funny. He made up the Hand of God stuff to take the water and just came up with it off the top of his head in an interview. Shame the ball didn`t come off the top of his head. Would have saved a lot of fuss and bother.

Its beyond me how people stand up for that scabby little bastard. Only thing he didnt cheat was death. Because he was the greatest player to ever kick a Football. You sir really are a Turd! Was he though? Is tyson gay an amazing sprinter? Lance armstrong the worlds best cyclist? Maria sharapova the greatest tennis player? Anderson silva the greatest MMA fighter? Simple answer. No. They are cheats. How can you be the greatest footballer to ever kick a ball but also be on recreational and performance enhancing drugs your whole career. He was a disgrace to the game. Ultimately being banned from the game for his, i think fourth or fifth time. Then he learns his lesson right? No. Hes in an executive box at the world cup in russia snorting cocaine on camera, countless times hes been caught on the sidelines snorting cocaine on camera. Real scum of the earth who yes, may have been a good footballer, but im sorry, that all goes down the drain when you go against the guidelines and rules of the sport so much. Very, very warped way of thinking. Ps you sir really are a t0ssp0t.

If you're going to try and make a point don't lie. He was banned twice; -1991 for testing positive for cocaine, he served a 15 month ban before joining Sevilla for a season. -1994 for testing positive for ephedrine which, again he received a 15 month ban and $10,000 fine. So overall once for a weight loss drug and once for a drug which, would have made him play worse.

Shame the ball didn`t come off the top of his head. Would have saved a lot of fuss and bother. Shame Steve Hodge just booted it in the air towards Shilton. Shame Shilton who was about 6'3, got beaten in the air by somebody barely 5'5. Shame the Referee completely missed it. Loads of Ifs and But's. I still don't get why people are so bitter over a handball 34 years ago, that overshadows their judgement of an absolute genius. I'd love someone to name me a Footballer whose never cheated. Or a player or team that hasn't benefited from a dodgy decision. I mean England won a World Cup by a ball that clearly didn't cross the line, which Diego brought up himself when he was asked by an English reporter while manager of Argentina when playing Scotland.

Four was wrong he failed 3 drugs tests. Also have you taken cocaine? Its a stimulant and would have no way made him play worse, in fact it elevates your awareness levels and energy. Ephedrine also isnt just a weight loss drug, Its not chemically to far from amphetamines so again, increased level of awareness, more energy, its also a bronchodialator so it opens your airways and blood vessels therfore allowing more blood, oxygen and nutrients reaching the muscles and an increase in the by products (lactic acid etc) in leaving the muscle so a massive enhancement in performance.

Very, very warped way of thinking. Ps you sir really are a t0ssp0t. Those people you mention knowingly took drugs to enhance their performance, and make them better than their opponents. Diego Maradona didn't. Maradona took Ephredine, which is used to treat Asthma, breathing problems, low blood pressure and obesity. He took it late in his career when he was 34. To compare it with people like Lance Armstrong is absurd. A lad from abject poverty from the Barrio's of Buernos Aires becomes the greatest player on the planet, with the weight of a nation on his shoulders. Yeah he had his flaws. Most Mavericks and Geniuses like Maradona have flaws it's what makes them who they are. Later in life, he could barely walk, not because of his size but because his legs took such a beating from players kicking him his whole career. I'm not a huge fan of Gary Lineker, but his tribute pretty much sums up why many people love Maradona and why he is the greatest player of all time.

Well i've watched a lot of games since 1958 -- So i think i've got a grasp of the game. I'm not sure you get what i mean ? Maybe you like cheating and i find it acceptable. I don't whether it be football, Tennis or cards. As i stated a cheat is a cheat.

Greatest ever to kick a ball - Really ? Not Pele or even Cruyff then who did it the proper way ... Not Bobby Charlton or Franz Beckenbauer ?
Hypocrisy in World sport especially football is Crazy!!

Name me a Footballer who has never "Cheated". Maradona was probably the most cheated on player, with opposing players trying to break his leg every game. In the 1986 Quarter Final,Terry Fenwick elbowed Maradona straight in the face. It's hardly surprising that players like Maradona who are on the end of constant "Leg Breakers" and foul play from the opposition develop a cynical side themselves. Certainly I think that if I spent my whole career being kicked, jostled and elbowed I might feel within my rights to "Cheat" as well in the heat of the moment. You mentioned Pele, well he was a master of conning refs into giving free kicks, linking arms with a defender and bringing both of them down while making it appear that he had suffered the foul. Like Maradona he was constantly kicked as well. Plenty of people have taken drugs too, you've mentioned another one Johan Cruyff. He also smoked 50 fags a day. I haven't really heard anybody talk about Maradona as a role model. Just that he was a flawed genius, whose talent with a Football at his feet was better than anybody else.

Hey aren't you the guy who slammed JCH so vilely after he missed a penalty at Portsmouth ... You have zero credibility and probably have a poster of Simeone in your bedsit ... Shush your nonsense!

Yeah I am. Because we were in a relegation dogfight and he balooned a Penalty 20 yards over the bar. As above things are said and done in the heat of the moment. I apoligised for my outburst and JCH was a brilliant player for us. I don't give a rat's arse whether you think I've got credibility.
