Just thought it was time to apologise. Like many mindless youngsters, I remember chanting Aberfan to the Welsh sides we played. This was was a long time ago but no excuse. Some 30+ years later I want to say sorry for being a complete prick. I'm a father and grandfather now and it still haunts me now I know what happened. God Bless all those that died and their families.

Echo that - worse than embarrassing looking back on it. What were we thinking?

For anyone who doesn’t know the context of this, this is an interesting video to bring you up to speed (the crown context is fairly minimal)

I echo your feelings. Lots of my family are welsh. We did not have a clue what we were singing until years later. Silly teenagers.
There is no expiry date on an apology.

Watched a documentary a few yrs ago , it really was horrendous. I apologise 😞

Echo what has been said. I was sixteen at the time of the disaster and remember how the mood of the whole of the UK changed after the Summer celebrations of our World Cup win. Having moved to Wales a few years ago now, we visited Aberfan and saw the memorial garden at the site of the school and then went up to the cemetery to see the section dedicated to the lost children and adults. It is a really wonderful memorial to those lost and for the families of the children and the people of Aberfan. If anyone on here intends going, be aware it is quite a steep climb to the top of the cemetery where the memorial graveyard is, so definately not for those less able.

Wow what an awful event, this was way before my time but i am no saint and joined in the shoebomber chant in the blackthorn as a youngster and i definately wish to apologise for that whilst we are owning up. Once again brainless mob mentality thinking youre anonymous. Idiot.

Jesus. That’s some insensitive sh1t. Although if I was watered up at 18 and trying to wind up the other fans, who knows.
A lot of things which are said are meant for the provocation. I’m sure if you’d sat down and met an Aberfan survivor, you wouldn’t have said anything of the sort. I guess you’d have been deeply sympathetic.
I think in life, in marriage, in general, we need to distinguish between things said in the heat of the moment from people’s actual beliefs. Many people are losing careers for the offhand remark or losing their temper, or even due to being drunk, and we take everything at face value as if it’s meant literally.
Still, right to apologise. But let’s be clear, you were provoking the fans rather than actually happy in the deaths of a load of innocent children. Unless I’m mistaken.
It doesn’t make it any better, but there is a distinction in terms of your own perception. While to the victim, it’s always unforgivable.
Being honest, if I’d heard that, I would reject the apology and tell you where to go. That’s fully understood, it’s right for that anger to endure. Much as Juventus fans will never forgive Liverpool.

In those days I went to each clubs home games but always preferred Rovers. I was a teen then but I thought it was pretty horrible, and the images were fresh in the mind as well.

Aberfan was long before my time, but I remember hearing the tragic story of what happened back when I was a child.
I can honestly say I would never feel compelled to join in any such sort of chant, but of course some get taken in by something in the heat of the moment with tribalism etc, and look back on it with regret. Fair play to you for coming on here all these years later and apologising.

Fair play to you for coming on here all these years later and apologising. As football supporters, one should show some respect to the other team's supporters. They are there to support their team just like us. Provocation, without being abusive and too heavy handed, mixed in with some joviality, may be OK sometimes but the boot(ing) may be on the other foot because the opposition fans can also have a go at us? Also, most areas of grounds, especially at the Mem, have children and teenagers there. One also needs to show them consideration. Rovers, like a lot of teams, but probably more than most other teams, now have a wide range of support from all parts of the country and the world. Our owner comes from the Middle East. We also have a large Welsh Gas support base. It is better to show support for your team than to show hatred for your opponents. UTG

Diolch iawn i bawb am eich geiriau caredig, I must admit I never even knew fans of English teams sang a chant about Aberfan. I was only 6 months old when it happened so don't remember the actual event itself but I do remember it casting a pall for many years afterwards, even for those of us in Welsh speaking Wales many miles removed from 'the Valleys' and the coal industry.
We all do mindless things at times, I'm sure those who sang those chants had no real sense of what they were singing about but it's encouraging to hear that people reflect on things they have done and have the guts to front up and apologise.
