Didn’t yesterday confirm that 442 (or variants of) is our best formation and we need to bring an end to the Hanlan on his own experiment?
I am all for modern football and I hate going back to 1990s football but we didn’t half look a lot better with 2 up top.
Maybe not ever 442, but definitely something with 2 up top.
As I remember, this is what Tisdale did and we won a couple. Then we went back to the same old “watch Hanlan get outmuscled and fouled” formation.
Hanlan looked loads better with Ayunga. If anyone should be played up top alone it’s Ayunga! I thought a lone striker was supposed to be a big guy?
Did you see what I saw?
Hanlan up top alone has to end. It hasn’t worked, he isn’t physical enough.
It could work - put on half a stone in the gym over summer Brandon. Like Ellis did. Then you’ll be a no 9.

If you play with one up top its essential he can trap the ball. Hanlan is possibly one of the worst pro footballers I've seen when it comes to that department.
If we go with one up top, we cannot play Hanlan.
Seeing as we have a lack of options, the logical switch is to instead go to two up top.

I'm still mystified what Barton sees in Hanlan to make him think that we can't play without him in the starting lineup, as he suggested in his pre-match presser.
No goals in our last 6 away games suggests he's hardly this season's equivalent to JCH.
Barton has somehow got to find a way to start Ayunga on Tuesday, if he feels he can't drop Hanlan then he'll have to go 4-4-2. Although matching Accrington's formation may dictate our own starting line up?

If I remember rightly JB usually played a single striker at Fleetwood. It's not working here so I hope he changes for the next game. Adapting to the circumstances is one of the key features of a good manager and what Garner in particular seemed unable to do

There are times when Hanlons touch and control look pretty good but it is hard work being a lone striker when physical approach is not your natural game. Hanlon has all the skills of a good winger and I would very much like to see 5 games on theh trot with a front 2 of Hanlon and Ayunga with Nicholson either tucked in or out wide., The substitutions made in the last four games have all avoided these players playing together. I would also like to see some spreading of authority when we have corners and free kicks. Westbrooke wastes far too many free kicks in good positions with an obvious floated ball which gives the keeper far too much time to collect. It is also about time that those individually accountable for conceding goals pay with loss of their place in the team. Kilgour and Leahy for all their improvements have both been individually accountable for goals conceded on a regular basis. The first goal was Leahy but even after that Kilgour should have blocked the shot. The second one was entirely Kilgour because he rushed totally out of position and then rushed in and not for anywhere near the first time misjudged his jump. The problem is that there are no signs that either player is good enough to cut these mistakes out of their game.

Hanlan is probably best suited to 4-3-3 but we don't have the players in midfield who could make that system work or a defence that could cope with the reduced midfield cover...catch 22.

One for the clubs historian if he isn't still banned.

Yep, need a partner for Hanlan to win the ball, give it a wipe with a cloth and place it at his feet! But seriously, I do think somebody could work with him on that part of his game as feels drillable and he has lots that’s good

Must have someone around him, completely agree, one of Nicholson or Daly if fit. Maybe Jonah if the opposition can be bullied a bit.

We haven't scored in our last 6 away games, so he was hardly the big loss JB made out it would be in Friday's pre-match, then Ayunga proved that was the case when he came on, I've not checked the states but out of the strikers isn't Ayunga our top scoring striker post Tisdale's dismissal, so he probably the striker most in form out of the 4 strikers if you inc Nicholson.

Still don’t know whether Ayunga will make it or not but am sure that he has no chance if only given the odd sub appearance now and again. He has to be given a run of games in which he starts.

When actually played upfront Daly and Ayungua can’t be far behind him in goals per game. Daly has not had a run since returning from injury, but before his injury he scored 3 goals in 8 starts in the league and 1 in 1 in the FA cup. Our best performances and run came with him upfront with Hanlon and with Nicholson in behind.

Hanlon looked better earlier in the season. But if he’s not training and is only at 80%, a rest will benefit him and us. I agree we look better with 2 upfront. Give Ayungua and Daly a go together. Think Nicholson will be more effective coming from deep as well. Most of his goals have come from runs from deep.
If we go 442, could have Nicholson and Rodman on the wings, or if we go with a diamond, we can put Nicholson in behind and him and Daly can change places when needed and drop in when they have the ball. They both have the energy to press as well.

Our best performances and run came with him upfront with Hanlon and with Nicholson in behind. The reason Hanlan must start is for several reasons . Firstly he's our top scorer and the only striker with experience in division one . Secondly : the board is to blame for signing two additional strikers who never hardly played in divisional football . Thirdly : Daly been a disappointment too. He's been here for 15 months and scored 4 goals . When we signed him just after Xmas and noticed he was on the bench around the festive period in 2019 in the premiership. I honestly thought he would be a big hit and big scorer . No-one can blame Jonah because he was playing in div 6 last year. So weighing everything up it's not like we got options . The vast amount of players have been flops this season Hanlan record is acceptable . So he's a must for me every game .

All season we have struggled to score goals, with Ben only wanting one up top, too negative we need to start scoring to win games or southend here we come

As I posted in the Match day thread yesterday, this is what Id like to see for the next two/three/four games, and 442 to go back to basics:
Day Williams Kilgour Baldwin Leahy Rodman McCormick Ledley(please) Nicholson Ayunga Daly
It obviously means reversing the Ledley decision (before one of our rivals snaps him up)
