It really irritates me that players can’t be sacked for getting relegated. Surely that is not performing to the requirements of the role. In my career if you don’t perform you are managed out on a capability process. If you don’t make money for the company, it’s not good for either of you. Instead we have to pay these losers. I mean, they weren’t even fit. What kind of profession is this where you can put bugger all into it and still get paid? With respect pal. You don’t have 11 other blokes trying their best ta make you lose as you work. Footballs a competition, there are winners an losers in every game played. plus I has ta say, I saw plenty of effort put in, so ta say they ‘put bugger all into it’ IMO is just not true. Um..... They do draw sometimes... No winner... No looser...

Well said, a few on here will think HMS p#$$ the league will set sail in August, I think we might struggle to start with and then pick up. FFS - we've already got a bus, now we've got a boat as well?
I suspect HMS p#$$ the league is a leaky old tub mind you ....
Massive club plus we have planning designs for various stadiums at various locations, Brunel never designed our dinghy 😂🏴☠️⚽️

One thing's for sure. It wont be easy. This is now our level unfortunately. I think that’s a bit strong, our level is League 1/Div 3...where we have traditionally played. A couple of years in Div 4 and we’ll soon bounce back.

A couple of years in Div 4 and we’ll soon bounce back. I think if you look at our history over the past twenty years it's pretty clear that our natural level is now League 2/Division 4. That wasn't the case in the past, but it is now.

Also it kind of means a player can not try on purpose to get sacked and therefore released from their contract from a relegated team. I would prefer contracts on a lower pay level with end of season bonus' based on league position. It means players in theory would fight till the end of the season to try to get that one place higher up the league and a bigger bonus .

I've thought this too, any of sporting event if you don't make it through the heats and your PB drops, you don't make the competition squad. It's like giving Eddie the Eagle a couple more shots at the Olympics!

Surely walking around the pitch obliviously avoiding any contact with the ball even when it's 3 feet in front of them, should me classed as "this isn't what we hired you for" 🙃

That would probably mean the end of the likes of Matt Le Tissier or Mark Noble who stay loyal loyal to their clubs despite them being at the bottom end of the table year after year due to the rest of their sides being poor.

I hate myself for saying this... But... I cant see us going up in one season. Happy for anyone to dredge this back up if we do I’m with you Hugh, it’s a big ask. Personally I just want to see an improvement, what level we play at is irrelevant to me. TBH though after a horrible anus like this season it should be easily achievable.

"What I'm gonna play next year is not what I might want to play longer term, but it's what we need to do to get out of it" says Joey.
I hope we don't fall into the clichéd trap of thinking you have to have a team of giants and be a long ball team to get promotion. Most of the longer ball teams of giants were bogged down in mid table and lower, where as some of the better footballing sides are in or around the top 7. The likes of Cambridge, Bolton, Newport, Tranmere, Forest Green and Exeter can physically compete, but all played some good stuff this season. We also played some good stuff when we won promotion under DC.
I'm hoping we can build a side to not only get out of league two, but with the ability to go again at a higher level. I know people might think I'm getting ahead of myself and the priority first and foremost is just getting promotion, but if we are smart with our recruitment and get a few players with the quality to also step up, then the transition will be smoother and we can go again the following season with limited upheaval.

Players who can play league one or higher don’t get contracts at league two clubs. Unless you buy unproven players or kids. I wonder what would happen if we did that? Joey is merely saying the team he assembles for league 2 won’t be the team he ultimately wants, it will be the best he can do in league 2 Joey wants to be elite, work with the elite and he’s saying he’s half embarrassed he will have to assemble a realistic squad for league 2, not a load of child prodigies and unproven players like this year To me this means he will buy and play proper mature league 2 performers, not league one sicknotes, league one legs gone or conference players with fingers crossed they step up. A few of these sure, but not the backbone of the team a load of promotions to league football. Proper players for the league were in. Big seasoned pros. Did you see how Baldwin got shoulder charged off the ball in his own box last week? That’s the kind of players we won’t need and I can’t wait for a team of adults and not skinny ball players who get knocked off the ball in their own box. Any genuine league one player wouldn’t come to league 2 for less money - unless we give long contracts. Of course we can sell them the dream, but every club has a dream and currently we are a failing loss making club with a terrible ground. There is no reason to think players will take wage cuts to play in league 2 because we are nice guys and WE as supporters think we’re great. Every team thinks that

We are arguing at cross purposes. I am suggesting good league 2 players. There is no reason they can’t play higher if they are good league 2 players. Where we may disagree, is I don’t want a team of ball players who would be better in league one yet in league two get beaten off the ball like our current squad have all year. No more fancy dans, we need a strong spine of strong, mature players. Great if they can play higher, I just don’t want punts. Proper players on good money that other teams want. Get the chequebook out Wael. I’ll stick £20 in.

Of course there are, you’re correct. Our first season in League 1, we had Lee B, Tom L, Lines, Marty T, Billy B. Ellis, who were all capable of stepping up a level. Some had even stepped up two levels from the Conference. And some stepped up 3 levels to the Championship. So it makes perfect sense to get players who are decent players and those who are decent can do it at a higher level. UTG!
