We were 3rd in League 1 having won away at Ipswich. The football wasn't good to watch but it was effective at getting results. Wycombe managed to get promotion to the Championship playing in a similar style. The vision behind appointing Ben Garner seemed to be 'Sign young players and get them playing in a passing style of football similar the the biggest clubs so that those clubs would sign them for high fees. The young players would be attracted to signing for Rovers as they would be playing in that style of football'. There now seems to be a short-term plan to sign older, experienced players in order to get promotion back to L1. We are 3rd from bottom of the Football League.
Regardless of vision, you need the right players.

You’ll never enact a vision or philosophy with poor recruitment, no matter what it is.
One thing I don’t want to see at the end of this season is a massive breakup of the playing squad with 10 or 15 players signed again, whether Barton’s there or he isn’t. ISTM that the common denominator of the last 3 seasons is that we’ve had a huge player churn, I genuinely think we now need a bit of continuity, with emphasis on evolving the playing side with the right recruitment in just a few areas where we’d really need it. I appreciate that might be difficult with a lot of players in the squad being on one year contracts or coming to the end of their careers.

They got promoted due to Covid but I know what you mean. No way would they have done it otherwise

After Walsall, Swindon, court cases or Christmas, we cant rip the squad up and start again (again). Continuity is needed and this time anyone taking over has to treat staying up as important! On a side note, was lovely to see Hanlon celebrating his tap in at the Etihad last night. Too many players got huge stick on here for being part of a failed season, some a long way from being justified.

Loan players, that will be three. Players on one year contracts, maybe about seven. Platers a end of contract if not renewed, must be a fair few. In fact what players are under contract for next season?

I appreciate that might be difficult with a lot of players in the squad being on one year contracts or coming to the end of their careers. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the squad will need a massive overhaul of players again in the summer with several players on loan, several not good enough and numerous ageing players. I was quite excited about our vision of building a younger team, developing players to sell on at a profit, reinvesting some of that and trying to play an attractive brand of football. Not even sure what the plan is now, it certainly isn't a long term plan and the one that was spoken about by our CEO only 8 months ago that could have potentially made us more sustainable. Of course we made mistakes and maybe tried to change things too quickly, but I think the overall idea was a good one. As I understand it we were trying to adopt a similar approach to recruitment as a club like Brentford but on a smaller scale. "Data is a big part of the recruitment process," Rasmus Ankersen, Brentford’s co-director of football, says. "There's no player I've ever recruited at Brentford without data having its say, but also no player recruited without the traditional method having had a say. Data can tell you where to look, but cannot tell you exactly who to pick" says Ankersen. “The key is being able to identify undervalued talent in the market, develop them, and then sell them on for profit, gradually building more value into the squad and gradually increasing the level of the squad” said Ankersen.

This guy Ankersen obviously knows what he's talking about. Not so many years ago Brentford were viewed as a very similar club to Rovers.
The last couple of years has been characterised by poor recruitment be it young or old players. In addition, some players who eventually left appear to have flourished following their time with us.

Didn’t JB say that he spoke to his mate Duff about what was required to get out of League 2, even before the end of last season (but after relegation was confirmed)? I believe that is partly behind the reason for temporarily abandoning the buy young and cheap, sell for vast profit approach and why a few wise old heads and, allegedly, steely northerners have been recruited. On paper the signings appear to meet the brief but the reality is that they haven’t settled and, as has been mentioned before, the proposed style of play/tactics don’t seem to suit the fit and available personnel. I think it’s a little bit of everything going wrong which adds up to the situation we are in now but I don’t think it is for the lack of vision, just the execution of it combined with detrimental external factors.
