I have my own views, which might be controversial.
I think it all originated from right wing hate groups in the 1970s/80s. Like the NF and BNP.
They chose to align themselves with Unionists because of the Union Jack waving, and at the same time were infiltrating and influencing football firms. Ripe young meat and easy pickings.
The IRA were very active in those days as well. Which didn't make them popular.
So young right wing hooligans adopted Rangers as their alternative club and role model, being the big Protestant club in Scotland, and professed a hate for Celtic.
Some English teams have a similar divide, such as Liverpool/Everton and to a very small extent Man Utd/City, but it's very low key compared to Glasgow.
This misunderstood loyalty has trickled down the years and still exists, although I'm not sure if your average 17 year old English football fan would even know why he is meant to be a Rangers fan.
I'm not suggesting all English fans who also follow Rangers think this way. Many just have a second side and have chosen Rangers as a big name.
But it's definitely a thing. There is a massive bias in favour of Rangers on the English terraces.
Those are my thoughts. I've had them for many years but never expressed them.
Maybe I'm completely wrong and I'd be interested in any other views.

For me it’s simpler. About football only. The Celtic v Inter Milan European Cup final is still one of the most memorable matches I remember growing up. Coming home from school seeing Inter go 1-0 up then waves and waves of Celtic attacks before winning 2-1. Still remember it like it was yesterday. What a team, all 11 born within 30 miles of Celtic Park. First British team ever to win the European Cup. Always Celtic for me.

UK celtic fans often have an Irish connection and the separatist stuff makes Celtic unlikeable.

No Scottish family, zero connections up there, just utterly adored Gazza as a player in the mid 90’s when I was a 10 year old. Especially for England. The Scottish Prem had plenty of sky coverage back then, probably more than they have now, so after idolising Stewie & Archer on a Saturday down Twerton my ‘top level’ pick was Gascoigne and he’d just come back from his Italian secondment to settle in Glasgow.
I guess it just stuck.
Also, wouldn’t say ‘support’ as such. Even though I’ve been to Ibrox a fair few times, more of a preference if you will.
Naff all to do with religion either, load of old nonsense.

That’s not true, I know Glaswegian Rangers fans and Glaswegian Celtic fans and they all support Scotland at major tournaments with varying degrees of enthusiasm. I think you’d struggle to find a Scottish Rangers fan support England, beyond perhaps a notion of wanting to see the UK as whole succeed on the international stage from some more pro-unionist ones. There’s more of a fondness from Celtic supporting Scots for Ireland, but again if its a case of Scotland vs Ireland at a major tournament, they’d be cheering on Scotland. |

I didn't say all of them. With Rangers It's become more prominent over the last decade. They feel completely let down by the SFA and the rest of Scottish Football for their liquidation and demotion to the bottom tier of the Scottish Football league. The Tartan Army is made up of supporters from the likes of St Johnstone, Falkirk etc, Rangers & Celtic, similar to Liverpool & United here have very little interest in the national team. Celtics Irish connection is obvious in every way, not very Scottish at all, apart from location. You'll rarely see a Saltire anywhere near Parkhead |

It’s a bit weird that some “football” fans claim to support 2 teams, how is that even possible? I knew a few lads at school who’s favourite second team was Rangers, yet only one of them had family up in the Scotland. The rest just did it to follow a club that was winning things I think.

I don't really like replying to my own thread, because after all I'm not GGMI, but the Rangers thing is a weird one. A lot of fans have various random 'second' clubs, perhaps because of who their parents supported or where they were born, or a whole host of other reasons, but supporting Rangers is in a different category. A large minority of fans claim to have some sort of affinity with them for no obvious reasons, although I have my theories which seem to be mine alone. |

At any given game you can see Celtic AND Rangers scarves and sometimes flags at Liverpool games. Without a doubt Liverpool FC are more politically aligned with Celtic these days. This is down a lot to how Celtic supported Liverpool after the Hillsborough disaster but this has now evolved a strong socialist alignment between the clubs.
Obviously the strong Irish connection is also a factor, after all Liverpool IS the capital of Ireland.
By the way JB’s preferred Scottish team is also Celtic, sensibly kept low key whilst at Ibrox.
