As ever, I’ll judge him by what I see on the pitch and I wish him a successful rovers career. We’ve been stung before with players coming in who are highly rated by the fan base they are leaving. Ehmer and blizzard come to mind. But this looks a good one on paper. Tbf is a good point, but this one is a least a good player in a good side (whereas Ehmer was "good" in a dogsh*t side so maybe just looked better than he was) Valefan coming in peace. Gibbo is a great signing for you guys, definite fans favourite. Local lad who gave his all for the Vale. When other heads might drop in a game it was Gibbo who drove us forward.Vale with a fit Gibbo in the side were a better team. So you may ask why has he gone ? As usual it's money, his contract came to an end and he is a free agent. We thought he was going to leave in January , rumour had it to a Championship side but he was struck by injury and only returned for our last few matches.Gibbo had been largely injury free in his time at the Vale apart from the last 2 seasons playing approx one third of our games. With this in mind ,Clarke our manager offered him a new contract which was a pay as you play. The more he played the better the contract. Bristol we understand have given him a straight 2yr deal. I can understand both sides doing what they have done and time will prove which viewpoint was right. A fit Gibbo is a big miss for us and will surely get a warm welcome on his return.

Thanks for this.Having until recently lived in Staffs for 50 years,I know the club well and your Chairperson and of course your manager are amazing.I have had lots of messages from Vale fans who all (like you) call us 'BRISTOL'.There is no such club as Bristol other than perhaps the Rugby team. Anyway thanks for this and please send some oatcakes we can't get in the South West.

Couldn't agree more with this Vale fan... Fact Hard to accept. Bristol rovers are a way bigger club than us. Not even in question. Horrendous tin pot shed for a ground is holding them back. That was me !! Few delusional fans at Vale ( as at all clubs ) seem to think your similar status to us. As you have obviously read I stuck to my guns . Anyway hope you don't mind me posting. You've got a cracker of a player in Gibbo. One of our shining lights. Can play in both full back or wing back positions and at Wembley played right centre half of a 3. The big but......is he's had horrendous bad luck with injuries and has broken down a few times. Rochdale away in February he went off in tears after breaking down again. We did feel like we were walking on eggshells with him. Think only played about 30 odd of our last 70 games. Keep him fit he's a nailed on starter for you, granted I don't know anything about his direct competition. Intense, 100MPH whole hearted player. Football is like that, you move on. Every faith Clarkey has a replacement lined up. Good luck in the other 44 games next season and the goodwill towards our manager during his horrendous time with his loss. To see what Gibbo can offer, check our goal v Swindle in the 2nd leg where he started the move with clever defensive play and a good pass All the best

Just like Bradford & Notts County, Vale Park puts The Mem to shame. Well most do tbf but I've always thought Vale Park was a quality ground.

I'm 53, went Eastville, Twerton and now the Mem. There's no comparison between the clubs, you'd easily average 12 next season in a decent ground. And would of taken 35 plus to Wembley. We are a middling club our crowds and away support spikes all the time. I came in December when it lashed down and the stewards let me and 2 mates in the seats as we were drowned rats . And prior to the game we went that chippy on the main road and the girl serving didn't know what a pudding was !! Fuming.

Go north of Hereford and getting anything other than Strongbow, Magners or some fruit flavoured nonsense is a struggle 🙂

Vale fans were expecting him to go to high end league 1 club or even the championship. Full of energy, hard working and likes to win the ball. Sounds like we're signing players with the right character first and foremost. Pleased with this one.... He has

Judging by the reaction of the Vale fans this could turn out to be a great signing.

Judging by the reaction of the Vale fans this could turn out to be a great signing. Knowing our luck with "good signings" he'll either be the next Dom Blizzard or the Millwall full back who never lived up to the hype. I just wonder where this leaves Hoole as if Gibbons stays fit then surely he'll keep Hoole out of the side?

Hoole is an asset to us, probably a cheap one wage-wise too, but if what the Vale fans and local media say is right then we could have brought in a player who becomes a fans favourite. Fingers crossed. On the other hand the addition of Gibbons could improve Hoole, win win.

Bored this morning so had a read of the comments on Vales Facebook group regarding Gibbons and there is an 82er on there putting us down, had a read of the post about the same subject and guess what there is an 82er also on there, what is it with them, why don't they just worry about themselves, is it that they are worried because we seem to be on the up. I just don't get it

Yeah I have read that alot, side step lol I know we're not massive but we are alot bigger than them. It's definitely a step up and the player obviously knows that

Most sensible Valefans acknowledge you are a bigger club, the attendance stats and history prove it. As regards the sideways move comment that's largely based on the January transfer rumour mill. Gibbo having just returned from a bad injury was expected to complete a move to a Championship side. Sheff Utd were mentioned . He then suffered another bad injury which scotched all transfer rumour talk. As you also are a newly promoted side( all be it by the automatic route) you are in that aspect similar to us. A fully fit Gibbo is Championship material.

It is a sideways move in my opinion, but I’m not complaining! For all that we have a slightly higher average attendance, Vale got some big crowds at the end of last season to show their potential and obviously have a better ground. Historically we have similar records with both never having been in the top flight. They’ve spent longer in tier 2 than us though.
I’m happy he’s come here but for all that our season was incredible, so was Vale’s with the backdrop of what happened to Darrell. It comes down purely to the deal he was offered by Vale which we were able to better.

As for the deal he was offered, from the bits I’ve read online it sounds to me like Vale offered him quite a low basic wage with bonuses for the number of games he played etc, whilst we offered him a higher basic wage and took his fitness out of the equation more. Definitely a gamble from us but if we can keep him fit then it’s one that should pay off judging by how highly the Vale fans rate him.

I don't think it's a sideways step, if they can only manage to take 15,000 to Wembley what sort of crowds will they get if they ever make the Champioship, whilst us we know we can take 40,000 and if we make the championship we will get well over 10,000 providing our ground would let us, I think it's a step up coming to us.

To be fair, both bristol clubs had fans from the opposite side, turn up. I am encouraged in seeing more younger faces of late and hope we can continue to provide entertaining football but, what will hold us back is the ground and i will leave that for that thread
