Yep...not sure that his tactics and game management this season qualifies as "good at the actual football stuff" though🤔 Still banned from the grumpy site, Les? We're 12th. If you think that's unacceptable in our first season back, then maybe you should reign in your expectations. Doctor! Rein, not reign.

Coutts was so influential in the second half of last season. Like Evans, there’s no way we get that promotion without his contribution. It is tougher in L1 of course but this is a guy that deserves respect as a leader of men and a fine footballer (ask Blades fans and they won’t have a bad word to say) who of course is coming to the end of his career and I’m sure is honest enough to know he’s fighting against the fading light. If the likes of Coutts and Evans have to move on they should go with our considerable thanks and it doesn’t sit well with me to hear people slag them off so easily. It’s as if we’re adrift at the bottom of the table and not twelfth and going through a wobbly patch in the season. We have to keep the faith. There are some excellent players and people at this club and I’m sure some new additions to boost our prospects in the coming days.

Evans is easily good enough for our squad! 21 G/A last season! Still under 25 and jus going through a bad patch. Coutts and Hoole need replacing with genuine starters and Mcormick needs to start ahead of Evans for at least 6 games to see if it kick starts him.

It's JB doing the slagging off this weekend as he's clearly stated players in their 30's shouldn't be making the mistakes they made yesterday.

Perhaps but when he concentrates on the football stuff I think he’s probably a good manager. But he gets sidelined quite often and that’s been a problem, imo. And after yesterday you may be more accurate than me! 😉 UTG! Well, he does spout a lot of nonsense, but to be fair to him he has calmed down in recent months. So I am no longer convinced it is that which is holding him back, which translates into on the field performance. Take the left back Clarke. Offers him an extended contract then in effect sacks him, within weeks. Thomas, disliked it so much he asked for his loan to be terminated. Rossiter, good player at L1 level, but a terrible injury record and looks like he will miss a large part of the rest of the season. Gordon from Brentford, decent attacking wing back but doesn't play him. Gibbons from Vale, another injury prone player who has missed a number of weeks this season so far. Gibson from Everton had injury problems coming in and is now injured again. Playing Evans in a different position from his successful year last year. Hoole, home grown talent had a breakthrough year last year at wing back, often played out of position at centre back. If not for the brilliant play of Collins and Coburn (one gamble that has paid off to date) up front so far this season I believe we would be relegation fodder. That is down to Barton, his recruitment gambles, his tactics and game management (which has cost us numerous points) and his man management. I remain totally unconvinced by him. Would be great though to have to eat humble pie at the end of the season. It really would. Problem is you won't eat humble pie you'll just stop posting until JB hits another rough patch.

I see the problems we have as generating from the midfield. Main problem we seem to have surrounds Coutts and his inability to play facing the opposition goal. He plays with his back turned running possession sideways or backwards. That’s fine when you’re 3-0 up and seeing a game out. However when we’re set up like that it means we start with no energy and it invites opposition teams onto us to press our midfield. It would also be ok if Coutts had a good range of passing whereby when we are pressed, the right forward pass is found to open up play. I believe this is part of the JB tactic, but the problem with it is Coutts has a limited range or is no longer quick enough to see the killer pass. As a result our more creative players, Evans, Collins, Finley and Sinclair have to drop deeper to collect possession or offer themselves. So we are constantly bottlenecking our midfield and as a result, Coburn is isolated and we play hoofball to reach him from the back. Conversely, if we lose possession on Coutts misplaces one of his sideways passes, because we have played inciting the opposition onto us, it makes for easy breaks to run at us. Coutts then can’t keep up with that kind of play and the rest of the midfielders are caught 15 yards further forward. It’s been the scene for most of our goals this year and it’s so frustrating because it’s so damn obvious. When Rossiter was in the team it was much different, him and Finley took it in turns to anchor the midfield, we played much more aggressively and our attackers connected. It’s true we do need another centre half at the back to strengthen the rear guard, but if we could sort out what’s just in front of them we will cure 70% of the issue. Hell of an assessment of Coutts but, I found him a hindrance last season and don’t really miss him when he’s not there, through injury or suspension. Always been sloppy on the ball, clueless without the ball. The beard would have stopped any chance of allowing the space Coutts and co allow for 1st and most goals yesterday. By the way, new keeper was sh**, and without Belly, will be defending 20-30 yards deeper. Belly not the issue. The blaggers in front are the problem. Utg

What is this nonsense, "4 signings to maintain our L1 status"?
I totally agree we need to strengthen in areas. Think we are light midfield, but mostly weak at the back!
But the thread title is a little bit dramatic!
37 points from 28. Comfortably mid table AND still not far off the play off spots - which we have never quite made it into.
Is the title a knee jerk reaction to not quite making it into the play off spots or something?
It always make me smile, fans getting too excited just because we are CLOSE to play offs and not actually in them for a few weeks or more.
We aren't having an awful seasons, we are mid table, we are building and should be fine at the end of the season.

Same applies to all the clubs in league one. Had we of beaten Morecambe and Accrington and then went on to beat MKDons this weekend it would have near enough guaranteed safety. We didnt so the battle continues.

We didnt so the battle continues. Exactly. 49 points might keep us up, 52 probably will, 55 will certainly do it. If we take the worst case scenario and say 55, we need another 18 points from 18 games. Our form has been getting progressively worse in recent weeks. We've played arguably the 2 weakest sides in L1 in our last 2 games, losing both and getting hammered at Morecambe. I don't therefore think it's an overreaction for fans to wonder where the next 18 points are coming from. Play like we did against Accrington & Morecambe and we won't pick up another point. Barton said it himself after Saturday, getting to 52 points is the primary target and we haven't achieved that yet.

Yes I thought he looked very comfortable with the ball, as you would expect, confident and had a good turn of pace. I cant think of much he did wrong yet was part of a defence that shipped 5 goals. I bet he wonders what the hell he has walked in to!
