Back in the days when I lived for Saturday afternoon, football focus, lift to the downs, walking under the fly over, excitement building, flower beds, the smell of fags and booze, the roar from the tote, smash and grab etc, and the great don megson on the touchline. Rest in peace A true gas legend.

RIP
Some wonderful memories of his team culminating in the Friday night at Southend where a goalless draw was enough to confirm promotion.
Still bear a grudge against Wrexham for taking away our unbeaten run of 27 (32) games in 1974.

We were hard to beat and had both flair and panache up front. Proper Eastville for entertainment

You will always be remembered in our dreams Remember playing against his son, ginger haired Gary Megson, think he played for Hanham abbots back then. Those were the days when, if you were city fan, you kept your head down in these parts of Bristol. Happy, happy times

I think it was when he first joined us from Cardiff taking over after Dick Sheppard's injury. 5 games without conceding?

Just dug out the league table from 'that' season, despite the 8 at Brighton we were far from a free scoring side,! only 5 teams from tier 3 that season have gone on to better things and no less than 9 are playing non-league ! food for thought! just realised its nearly 1/2 a century ago!!

I domenowe had it as 8 but those are the tricks the mind plays with us as we age. That team was the Buikding Block that Made me go Watch Rovers and i loved every single minute. Love a bit of nostalgia and even a smell can kick off memories of all of those years ago. You are more than likely right in it being 5 and not 8. I do remember it being mentioned each time we had another game with no goals against us

Just checked in my Rothman’s!
Malcolm Dalrymple took over immediately after Dick Sheppards’s injury and played 4 games before Jim Eadie came in and was unbeaten for his first 5 games.
What a season!

Extract from Bristol Rovers History Group website James Eadie. 1972-77. Ever-present during the 1973-74 promotion season, keeping 22 clean sheets in 46 League matches that campaign, goalkeeper Jim Eadie was a constant and reliable figure through the mid-1970s. He had also not conceded a goal in his first five League outings with Rovers. Eadie playing having earlier gone a club record 687 minutes unbeaten in League football. As Rovers went a club record 32 League matches unbeaten, promotion to Division Two was guaranteed and Eadie continued to perform well in the higher division.

Yes I was at that first league defeat of the season at Wrexham and iirc Dalrymple was in goal that day.Plus Leeds were also unbeaten that season up until then but I seem to recall they also lost on that day as well.

We were hard to beat and had both flair and panache up front. Proper Eastville for entertainment Yes he was very good at organising his teams to be sound and hard to beat. Iirc that award big Jim got for not conceding came at the end of the previous season in March/April ‘74 when we could see that he was building a good team. He added Alan Warboys that Match to partner Bruce B and then got Trevor Jacobs in the Summer. Can’t remember exactly when he switched Mike Green to defence but it worked a treat. What I loved about those times was the way managers were given time to build a team and in the days before freedom of contract they could rely on not losing their best players for nothing. Yet with that team there were no standout players, they were an outstanding team. (At the end of 73/74 Warboys and Bannister were the outstanding players but we didn’t know that at the beginning of the season). UTG!

What I would give for the Gas to have a team as entertaining and prolific as the one promoted in the 1973-4 season. The superb strike force of Banister and Warboys. Smash and Grab! Must say the promotion team of 89-90 was very good.

Yes, we weren’t particularly free scoring and, without checking, probably scored less than in Bill Dodgin’s time but we were a stronger team and the midfield and defence were hard to breach and we were better at ‘managing games’ (sorry to use modern terms!) and saw out several single goal wins. That team: Eadie Jacobs. Taylor. Green. Parsons Dobson. Stanton. Prince. Stephens Warboys. Bannister with Fearnley, Staniforth, Rudge providing great support. I have checked and we had 4 players ever-present, Eadie, Jacobs, Stanton and Taylor 4 others in the 40s, Bannister, Green, Parsons and Prince. Dobson (39) Stephens (31) and Warboys (32) in the 30s Thats what you call a stable team. UTG!

Sad news. He managed one of the best Rovers teams I ever had the privilege to watch. Large crowds at Eastville and amazing away support in the 73/74 promotion season. RIP Don and thanks for the memories. Did you get to know him mate ? Sadly not. I met Gary a couple of times.

Very sad news, one of only two managers to get us promoted to the 2nd tier in the time i have been supporting Rovers. Brought some great memories, Watney cup win, promotion and some great games in the seconed tier, one's that sticks in my mind include 5-1 win at eastville in the pouring rain against Notts County, 5-5 draw with Charlton and Bruce Bannister coming on and scoring in the last minute to equalise against Man utd in heavy snow. You brought us some great times RIP.

Bill Dodgin's side formed the basis of Megson's squad as KP said, but he introduced the defensive steel to ensure we not only won most times but didn't concede many goals either. What a great manager for us and it's very sad he's gone. Must be up there in the top 5 we've ever had. Probably higher. Like today, after years out of the 2nd tier, it was amazing to get back there.

Anyone know why no minutes silence or applause for our former manager before Pompey kick off ?
