I've just seen Jamie Cureton has secured promotion with Enfield as player manager, deserves huge credit. That takes some doing still playing at 47. Fantastic player and scored some absolute beauties, almost got us to the championship in the season that wasn't to be. Him and Roberts were the dream centre forward pairing. Kept Ellington and Zamora out of the team. Most memorable goal for me was against Stoke. The funniest goal was the one he knew nothing about against Walsall. I was surprised he only played 95 times for the gas, it felt like a lot more.

Top man is Curo!
Scored a goal v Crewe in front of the Thatchers End while initially on loan first of all which was almost the same as that goal away at Stoke.
My favourite goal of his was against Burnley 97/98 season, great counter attacking Football, started from Matt Lockwood in our own box, who played a ball to Beadle, who knocked it down to Penrice, who played a ball out wide to Curo, who played a brilliant one-two with Beadle again and Curo ran onto it chipped it over the Burnley defenders head and then slotted it beautifully past the Burnley keeper.
Superb team goal. Remember it like it was yesterday.
Loved watching that Rovers team under Ollie for the first few years.

Played 174 times for us (including the loan spell) according to the ever reliable Wikipedia, which probably explains why it felt like a lot more than 95.

OK, the article i read said he'd played 95 times. 174 does sound more like it.

Probably not a bad outcome as we got Rickie Lambert the same summer.

Really pleased for him. The way our fans treated him when he played against us at Reading away was shameful, yet he still wishes the best for Rovers.

Just goes to show how Chinese whisper can turn a true event into a complete lie. Jamie Cureton was never involved in any incident suggested at the time and yes, he was treated shamefully.

That's what made all the stick he got hard to take. Like you said he still has nothing but good wishes for Rovers. Absolute gem of a bloke is Curo

Sadly not too long after those heady days,Stoke made the Prem and we were playing Nuneaton.

The rumour was at the time. And I remember it well, that he was shagging someone at the clubs daughter and that’s why we sold him overnight at a fraction of what he was worth. I’ve heard the rumour was total nonsense but it was believed by a large part of the fan base. The 250k fee seemed sus and people needed to explain why he went for peanuts

Same goes for Wigan remember Beadle getting a Hat trick in a 5-0 win, Reading away Cureton getting 4, Roberts 2 in the 6-0 Madjeski Masacre, 4-1 at Stoke, Ellington scored a Hat Trick in a 4-1 win v Swansea, Lewis Hogg scored 2 away at Brentford in a 6-2 win...... They've all managed to get to the top flight since. Hopefully our time will come.

The 250k fee seemed sus and people needed to explain why he went for peanuts Since then the fans have discovered that some players have release clauses written into their contracts eg Matty Taylor. However, officials of the club believed at the time, without hard evidence, that more than one party made some money when JC was sold.

Jamie was pure, unadulterated class for us and for every club he ever played (and plays for).
A natural poacher, that the third division will be lucky to see the like of again. I loved it when folk called him lazy...yeah Jamie, chase the ball to the corner flag and not quite get there in time. Or don't mate...you're a goal scorer, not a whippet.
As for the revolting claims against him...look goalwards for that.
Jamie C. Top man. 🏴☠️🏴☠️

Never understood how Roberts went for so much more as both were very good. I wish i could forget that bloody season
