Sounds like he’s a no nonsense centre back who’ll command things at the back . Need another centre back with a bit of pace to play alongside him now .

Good signing a leader, 35 in February 2024, should be the next Tony Craig that other younger players can learn from if he still has the legs. Definitely the first brick the club needs to put in place for all of our ambitions which is promotion. Can't wait until Monday when the other two signings are announced, just hope they are both under thirty.

Why what does it matter to us what side of thirty they are, if we sign two similar players then I doubt most of us will be complaining.

Seemed determined not to answer the question why leave Plymouth and join Rovers

Good signing and welcome to the Gas. We need to tighten up defensively and a positive goal difference will put us in the top half.

To be fair , this is bloody good ! 😂 Just hope it doesn’t mean our defence is going to be a dog’s dinner again next season!

James Wilson profile compiled by Stephen Byrne
Born 26.2.1989 Newport
6’ 3”; 12 st 13 lbs Centre Back
Career: 6.5.06 Bristol City (professional, 21.7.08) [21+10,0]; 2.8.08 Brentford (loan) [27,0]; 13.9.13 Cheltenham Town (loan) [4,0]; 31.1.14 Oldham Athletic (free) [98+2,2]; 5.7.16 Sheffield United (free) [7,1]; 17.7.17 Walsall (loan) [19,1]; 21.1.18 Lincoln City (free) [9+10,2]; 2.8.19 Ipswich Town (free) [38+2,2]; 20.5.21 Plymouth Argyle (free) [79+4,1].
Just as Mike Green had achieved in the 1970s, so it is ⁸hoped in the summer of 2023 that tall central defender James Wilson could be promoted from the third tier in successive seasons with Plymouth Argyle and Rovers. Developing as an athletic defender at Ashton Gate, he had scored on his City début in a League Cup-tie at Gresty Road, Byron Moore scoring for Crewe that day, and he had been sent off before half-time, whilst playing for the Robins against Leeds United in February 2012. Loan spells followed, Wilson playing in September 2009 when Rovers, thanks to two Chris Dickson goals, won 3-1 at Brentford. In November 2009 he was sent off at Wycombe in Brentford’s colours, the resulting penalty being saved by Polish international Wojciech Szczęsny. A regular at Oldham, he scored against his future employers Sheffield United in April 2014 and against Port Vale four months later; he also played in a 7-0 defeat at MK Dons in December 2014. One highlight of an injury-hit spell at Bramall Lane (he joined United even though his father is a passionate Wednesday supporter) included the winning goal, playing alongside both Paul Coutts and Leon Clarke, in the Blades’ 2-1 win against Oxford United in August 2016. At Lincoln he scored against Barnet in January 2018 and in a 6-2 victory at Port Vale that October, but was sent off the same month at Scunthorpe in the Football League Trophy; goals for Ipswich followed against Accrington Stanley and his former club Lincoln City, both in March 2021, whilst he received a red card at Fleetwood in October 2019. At Home Park, playing on the right of a back three, Wilson was sent off in a 5-1 defeat at Charlton in August 2022 and scored on New Year’s Day 2023 against MK Dons. Club form earned international recognition, as he played nine times for Wales at Under-19 level, some as captain, scored once in three Under-21 matches (his goal came eleven minutes from time in a 5-1 thrashing of Luxembourg at Llanelli’s Parc y Scarlets in March 2009) and won a full Welsh cap in October 2013, replacing James Collins for the final thirty-three minutes of a 1-1 draw against a star-studded Belgium side. Honours followed too, as he achieved promotion from League Two with Brentford in 2008-09 and Lincoln ten years later, as well as from League One with Sheffield United in 2016-17 and Argyle in 2022-23. He had appeared against Rovers once for Brentford, twice with Ipswich (including another former Plymouth central defender Graham Coughlan’s final match as Rovers’ manager in December 2019), once for Walsall (when Ollie Clarke scored a late winner at The Mem in September 2017) and twice as Argyle stormed to the League One title in 2022-23. Injuries followed: a broken ankle suffered against Cambridge United restricted his 2018-19 season and a knee injury in 2020-21 at Ipswich caused him to miss three months meaning that, despite being named Ipswich’s Player of the Year, he was released at the season’s end. Wilson was also unlucky in the Football League Trophy; cup-tied in 2018 when Lincoln won the trophy, he was in the Plymouth side swamped 4-0 by Bolton Wanderers at Wembley.

Wilson was still Ipswich's player of the year fairly recently despite missing 3 months of the season!
If he stays fit during his time at Rover Wilson sounds like he could be a great signing and a new fans favourite.

Yes, although it’s always good to have your own home-grown players most teams in the lower leagues sign players on one, two or very occasionally three year contracts and being over thirty isn’t really a handicap as long as you have other players with some speed in the team. But horfield has a point insofar as all teams need a balance of ages. I’m sure JB will be aware. UTG!

Potentially a crucial piece of our defensive jigsaw
Needed some experience to go alongside the youngsters.
Will we play a back 3 I wonder?
I’m going to guess this as our starting line up against Pompey
Belly
Hoole Wilson Beefy
Sinclair Rossiter Evans Ward Flash
NEW collins
Think we are in need of another CB, at least one wide player and a striker. But I think there is no need for massive panic as the squad is coming along nicely.
