We should only pay a decent fee for May if we are serious about a promotion challenge. If we just want to consolidate then I would rather us take a punt elsewhere as we won't make a profit on him and would probably even lose money at 30. It's no secret that the remit for this season is promotion. It's a big enough secret that nobody from the club is officially suggesting that's the remit.

Rovers should pay the 250,000 fee for Alfie May to show us fans that the club is serious about wanting promotion. A quality striker is well worth the bargain fee. Rovers should pay the money if they feel that he is worth the overall package that would be necessary to capture him. The biggest gesture that the club can make is to storm up the League - not to make a short term signing that will thrill today but be forgotten tomorrow if he doesnt fit in with the plans.

Fox in the box striker is one thing we don’t have, he’d been an excellent addition to the ranks. John Marquis is that player, look at the highlights of his goals at Doncaster and Portsmouth, we just didn’t give him enough service in the second half of the season. His goals per game/minutes on pitch record was easily the best last season.
Very underrated imo.

Agree. 0.47 goals per 90 last season for big John. Next best Coburn with 0.39. Not to mention his hold-up play was 10x that of anyone else in the squad last season and the leadership, nous & work rate he brings. Wouldn’t be against him being our main striker with Collins, Brown, Thomas, Sinclair, Evans etc. playing in the three attacking roles just behind him. i.e. ____Rossiter__Ward Thomas__Brown__Collins ________Marquis

Had a quick snoop on the Gills forum and the rumour is May wants £8k a week! Would have to be a Derby or Charlton if he’s really holding out for that much.

Marquis knows where the net is sure, but not quite what I’d personally call fox in the box. He does a lot of ugly stuff that no one else in the squad is capable of, loves a physical battle with the biggest CB and does not shut up. May is short, sharp, quick, can pounce & arrive unnoticed when the ball drops from 18 yards. Would thrive off of Collins, Big John, Brown or even Lofty. Plenty of 6 foot goal scorers in our front line, would like to see an alternative option join them.

I guess I just saw fox in the box role as always being there at the right place at the right time to convert, almost like Erling Haaland. Marquis can certainly be that player and have that hold up ability like you say. May is definitely a different option though, plus how many times can we say as football club we’ve snatched one of the divisions leading goal scorers over the last few years from a rival? Would be interesting to see how JB keeps 4 league one double figure goal scorers in Collins, Brown, Marquis and May happy if he pulls this transfer off.

This summers transfer activity has been one of the best I can ever recall already, getting May as well as Brown in addition to AC, Sincs & Marquis would be quite incredible and certainly a statement of intent.

Seems like we’re going for it.
Anyone got any cash on us for this season?

Wael's 'Evolution not revolution' quote was 7 years ago. Maybe now is the time

Wael and Joey have already said in separate interviews that the playoffs are the target. Said a few weeks ago.

I see Sam Smith hasnt joined anyone yet following the end of his Cambridge contract. Could be a good signing instead of this one? Decent age to sell on as well
