ON first look it's hard to disagree with the OP'S picks, then you realise who is left out and you realise what a good squad we have this coming season ! FWIW though the G/K is still up for debate given what i saw v Spirites, no prob with Jones starting, may have to give Taylor a week to settle in and think Hoole and Jones would benefit from Wilsons experience, elsewhere and this will be very, very controversial , based on form i may go for Brown over Collins, and Evans over Thomas, pleased to say it is very hard to come up with the definitive starting 11, good luck JB! what ever you do some players and some fans will be disappointed! PS Aint it good to be talking about football , selections and games!, still differences of opinion but much more civilised!! Brown and Thomas have been playing different roles. Thomas and Sinclair have been next to the touchline when attacking. Brown has been in he no 10 role.

OK, for Pompey Belly Hoole Wilson Connolly Gordon Ward Crama Finley Sinclair Brown Collins Settled 11 after a few games, Cox Hoole Taylor Connolly Gordon Ward Crama Thomas Brown Collins Marquis Carma would suit that DM role. I agree. Very assured & his vision is excellent. Like a prime Emmanuel Petit. As long as he brings his chameleon with him though!

You'd have to assume James Wilson starts? When Taylor signs we seem to be spoilt for choice for centre backs but I still don't believe we have the wing backs to make 3 at the back work. Weaknesses from your line up are surely the full backs, another option for defensive centre mid (how many games do Rossiter and Grant play between them??) and possibly striker (I like Marquis but how many games will he 90 minute?). I think Gordon would be ok if he’s got the cover defensively and Jones is definitely worth a start based on his preseason if we want a bit more attack from there. At RWB I think Hoole would be absolutely fine, he’s getting better and better every season and you have to think he’ll keep Gibbons out of the team most of the time. Sinclair also played there as well last season but he isn’t a defender so shouldn’t have to put square pegs in round holes. All of this talk of playing a 3 back though makes me think we need one if not two more holding players in the middle. For me Finley is great but he isn’t a player to take us into the top six and we need to look at better. We also don’t know when Ward will get injured, I know he’s managed to stay fit so far but he has got terrible previous with injuries Finley has looked excellent in preseason, definitely back to his best.

Reviewed the squad this morning I actually think with the pressure of Saturday at Fratton Park, I’d go with the following:
Belshaw
Gordon Wilson Taylor Hoole
Finley Ward
Sinclair Brown Thomas
Collins

What would people say is our squad weakness now?
I wouldn’t mind us taking a shot at a young winger for the bench just as another option. Other than that I’m struggling to think of anything!

I agree we look pretty well covered, for me we still need a defensive midfielder and I’d be happy to see a young hungry No 9 come in, maybe with Loft going out on loan Just hope we don’t all get carried away as it will take time for us to settle with a new looking defence and possibly keeper, however we should be entertaining to watch!! Can’t wait. UTG

We’ll probably have a slow start with some tough games early on and players settling in etc but I think this is shaping up to be a promotion season.

I read somewhere that Southampton are in for Bogarde so doubt we have a chance getting him back but yes he would be fantastic in the centre of midfield for us.

In terms of squad depth I’m not sure we’ve had better in my time watching Rovers (First games i watched were as a kid early to mid 80’s). The title winning side was good but we had a squad of about 14 in those days. We could probably now field two League One teams - one a promotion chasing team and the other mid-table.

Worried about our full back options tbh. I'd satisfied with Gibs & Hoole at RB but LB I'm not sure we have top 10 quality

I'd satisfied with Gibs & Hoole at RB but LB I'm not sure we have top 10 quality Gordon had a bit of a mixed season last year but it was his first full season in men’s pro football. He’ll be better for that experience this year IMO. Jones is shaping up as a decent deputy and if Grant (big if admittedly) can stay fit left back is supposed to be his best position.
