Terrific Second half at the Valley ...Thought both teams put in a real shift.
Marks we awarded as follows.... ( Again just our opinions)
Cox - 7 - Starting to look like a first class keeper - great hands - comfortable with crosses. Question mark maybe over the goal which seemed to just go through him.
Gordon - 6 - Good shift but not sure he is the answer to our LB question.
Crama - 8 - Outstanding, talking with Cox all the time and other than one crazy blip was first rate again.
Taylor 8 - Won literally everything in the air. Will keep getting better and better.
Hoole - 6 - Better than Saturday but still think he is off his best. Better link up play with LT last night.
Evans - 7 - Played in the wrong position to balance the Finley situation didn't really work. Great free kick and put in a real shift.. continuing his strong efforts
Ward - 9 - My MoM - Was everywhere and got kicked a good few times a swell - Great pass to LMc for the winner
Sinclair - 7 - Not a great night BUT scored again. Difficult to be too critical.
Big John - 7 - The goals will come - two huge opportunities last night and both on target but blocked.
Collins - 7- Carried the ball well at times and fab assist for the first goal. More to come from AC.
Thomas - 7- Faded in the second half before being replaced. Lively in first half though.
Subs...
LMc - Not on long enough but delighted for him with a well taken winner.
Loft - Again not on long but we need better from the bench - first touch is woeful
Grant - 5 - Thought we looked weaker when he came on - sold us short a few times.
Finley - 5 - Just not found his level again - worrying as he was rashly made Captain.
Vale - 5 - Had a decent chance that he was stretching for so couldn't really get the power behind the shot - will get better hopefully.
Gas Following 8 - Great numbers for a Tuesday night and loud at times.
Referee Team - 6 - Pretty good to be fair.
Charlton 7 - decent team who we need to finish above if we are to have that dreamboat season.
Dean Holden - 4 - Sad utter cock who probably wont be managing there too long if they don't turn things around quickly.
All in all a terrific away win - I still think we need a replacement for Finley who has not shown top end L1 form at all for a number of games last season and this - LB worries me a little - 'Lethal Sniper Striker' needed to finish the chances we are creating.
JB seemed to suggest there would be 'Ins and Outs' in the next week or so .... so let's see where we are at come 1st September.

Good assessment 0202b02ba, agree with most of that, Cox did well in the 90 even if goal was a bit disappointing. Glad to see credit to Azza. Think Hoole gets a hard time from fans, he typically is dealing with the most dangerous and tricky players. Thought he fought well and made no real errors. The point on us playing good football teams is key. How will this team do against the dark arts/anti-football teams. Last year we were awful. I feel the defence is so much better to deal this year, but we need to prove we can beat this teams! Yes agree their no23 very tricky, especially first half! Hoole was ran a bit ragged there... We are well equipped to deal with dark art football, only thing is experience to contend with. Team spirit helps a lot so get the boys gelled and not only will we become a force, playing easy on the eye football too. I'm more than encouraged after 3 games, 5 points.

Great win, and deserved if you look at the chances we created.
Marquis could have had 2, Sinclair should have had 2 and Vale had a chance at the back post.
Looking at the highlights I'm not sure why Taylor stayed on his feet when Kanu scored. If he'd gone to ground he might have blocked that shot. Mistake in my opinion. Other than that he was solid again.
Crama was class again, with the exception of that moment where he nearly gifted Charlton the lead.
MOTM definitely Ward. Absolutely superb. Covers so much ground and is equally good defending and on the ball.
Everyone else had a solid 7/10 in my opinion.
Really pleased for Macca. I hope that gives him the confidence to rediscover his best form.

What is the best position for Macca? In 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 Can he play alongside Ward in the 2?

What is the best position for Macca? In 4 - 2 - 3 - 1 Can he play alongside Ward in the 2? I always think he's best in the Evans/Brown AM role, but he needs to be an 8 and back up to Ward, think he can do this role. What we dont have is a Finley back up.

Have to say George Dobson for them was class. We are crying out for a player like him

Dunno if this was picked up earlier in the thread, at the post match interview JB said that we wanted Alfie May.
I thought that was quite interesting. Shame we didn't get him, I thought he did everything but score last night.

With regards to the dark arts (and not having watched any other highlights from other teams) should it not in theory be harder to do this this season? Time wasting being clamped down on with stopping free kicks etc. and also has been loads better so far with no one going down with fake injuries as they donât want treatment. Hopefully this should play into our hands with regards to a quicker tempo âproper footballâ display and a bit less of the dark arts?

Watch that freekick again. At first i thought it was poor defending from Charlton but upon replay/slow mo, theres nothing they could do. Brilliant from Rovers, a clear tactic. As soon as Evans touches the ball we're looking for the rebound. Great play

Wycombe have now got Matt Bloomfield in charge and spent well during the summer, they may well play a completely different style this season? Shrewsbury have also replaced Cotterill.

I dont mind Holdens bitter comments and other managers / pundits playing down of Rovers ( Simon Jordan of Talksport take a bow ) ,most likely stemming from JB . For me this takes the pressure of a very good Rovers team . If we got constant back slapping , we may just believe our reputation and implode . No , things are ticking along
quite nicely , bring on the negativity from em and lets see what we can show em....UTG

It most likely stems from the fact we're usually poor? If JB can find a goal scorer plus a DCM we could well be serious contenders, if the likes of Collins and Ward can stay fit and Evans and McCormick return to form.
