Apart from snake who have we sold for a bargain? That is the point for me. We end up letting players leave on a free as we aren't very good at cashing in on them. For all Snakey boys negative antics, he could have left on a free that summer. I think when you look that Taylor, Bodin, Harrison and Lockyer all left for less than what we got for just Barry in 1998 it's pretty damning.

To be fair, Taylor/Bodin/Harrison didn't play at the level that Barry Hayles did. Lockyer, we so messed up there. No fee and some fans were saying he wasn't good enough for us.

With inflation though Hayles in 2018 money left for c£3m, those three went for around £1.5m between them. It's frustrating because other clubs have been a lot better at that.

Irrespective of what fans said, in the two years before he left he was clearly an important part of the team and plenty good enough and seeing him go for nothing was poor. Yet tbf to the club we are told that they offered to renew his contract on several occasions but he was determined to go. We got nothing. MT signed a short term deal and we got £300k as opposed to £0 and MT gets pelters every time. TL, I think, had a long term plan which he stuck to and we lost out. For clarity I loved TLs time with us and have admired his climb up the leagues and have great sympathy for what’s happened but I’ve often shaken my head at the comparison of our treatment of both players. And before anyone comes back at me I do understand the anger over those few days in Jan ‘17 and who he went to. UTG!

A rare example of a footballer having a brain! Yes, probably. UTG! It's also worth noting the clubs treatment of Ollie Clarke. 271 appearances for the club, two time player of the year, over a decade service and he was given a derisory contract offer and no goodbye. I don't really think we can get too uppity about the Lockyer situation after the way the club treated Clarke.

I think you're right. We bought Channing from QPR for a reported £250k. All other sources suggest he went to Orient on a free.
Point still remains that nearly all these players went on to have success at a higher level and the values are peanuts compared to transfer fees extracted by clubs at a similar level to Rovers. Channing definitely left on a free. From memory, there was some behind the scenes stuff which would have helped him on his way.

I doubt OC would have downed sticks like so many did in ‘21 and this season gone. What is it they say? Treat people the way you’d like to be treated. Football is a very different matter I know but how you treat people is relevant in every aspect of business. Including football. UTG!

Notice that Ollie is out of contract having led Mansfield to promotion. I bet he's not on anyone's radar, but I'd definitely welcome OC back to the Mem.
Alfie Kilgour is still under contract, but JJ O'Toole has been released. WYHHB?

Yes, possibly a good call. I guess it depends on where he wants to live at this stage. I bet DC at Cheltenham will have at least a conversation with him to see his intentions. UTG!

the club is only partially to blame for the fees we get the whole state of football finance is whats driving it Posh and Oxford seem to usually get decent fees, I still can't understand how the former got £m's for Mason-Clarke then got him back on loan until the end of the season, meanwhile AC went for just £750K. Bodin seemed to go just as cheaply as the snake? I'm not sure how we let Lockyer leave on a free, why didn't the club transfer list him when we knew he intended running down his contract?

Back to the topic. Who do we want to win tonight ? Probably rather Boro were out of our league but want Bolton to beat either of these. Don’t really want Oxford a Wembley I suppose. Wish it was us.

He was the master of his own destiny and there was nothing we could do about it. We get the benefit of signing players from other clubs under the same circumstances - some people don’t like the system but it’s better than pre Bosman when clubs could effectively hold players as hostages.

Posh very nearly got a £1m for JCH, who knows what we might have got if we'd transfer listed him. We always seem to let the players call the shots, even AC messed about for the last year or so.

Unless both clubs were telling blatant lies a deal was agreed with us, Posh may as well have given him a free to get him off the wage budget but that's a different issue. Possibly somebody as now tapped JCH up, which might not be the case with every player.

Good first half at London Road. Posh looked good for Wembley when they took the lead but Oxford penalty right on half time has it nicely balanced.

Oxford sat too deep and lucky to be level on the night.Do that again 2nd half and they will be going out.
