It's early I know, but as we look ahead I will keep a track of the ins and outs here. Shows what a job George and Chris have! Let me know if any errors or anyone missing Key: Under ContractContract OptionOut of ContractGoalkeepersJed WardMatt Hall DefenceJames Wilson Connor Taylor James ConnollyJack HuntLuca HooleLewis GordonJosh GrantJames GibbonsMidfieldAnthony Evans Kamil Conteh Luke McCormick Grant Ward Jerry Lawrence Jordan RossiterRyan Jones Attackers/WingersChris MartinLuke ThomasJevani Brown Scott SinclairJohn Marquis Harvey Greenslade Leaving/retiring etc
Sam Finley Matthew Cox Tristan Crama Elkan Baggott Harvey Vale Brandon Aguilera Harry Vaughan George Friend Can we expect a wave of contract announcements this week following Sam's farewell? Jed offered a new contract. Would now expect neither option taken on Grant or Martin Who will be the next to say goodbye? Why wouldn't we take the option on CM, it's not like we've a good record of signing 15+ goals L1 strikers in recent years? My money is on Martin, G Ward & Hoole staying, Rossiter being offered a deal but keeping his options open and the rest being released. It's questionable whether Wilson & Hunt plus possibly Brown will all be told they are welcome to look for moves. I've no idea what MT makes of Connolly & McCormick!

It all depends on their wages for me. I would imagine both McCormick and Brown earn a fair amount compared to what they contribute on the pitch. If someone like Connolly is on low-ish wages then I would be inclined to keep him as a back up squad option as it is a long old season.

Matthew Cox Tristan Crama Elkan Baggott Harvey Vale Brandon Aguilera Harry Vaughan George Friend As we approach the end of the season and a few things become clearer, what are peoples thoughts on the OUT OF CONTRACT players. For me, definitely leaving will be Gibbons and Marquis Probably leaving will be Finley and Grant And probably offered new deals/options taken will be Martin, Sinclair and Hoole That leaves the following Rossiter - would offer a short term deal, but he may head elsewhere if he can get longer Gordon - I'm easy either way but a wouldn't mind a one year extension as our LB cover Greenslade - would definitely offer a 1+1 deal get him in pre-season games and early games, then loan to Conference for the season (with a recall) Jones - Really dont know, should have been breaking into the team by now. Is he going to get a chance? if not, no point in another loan season. Whilst MT’s initial thoughts on Jones were if he can’t get in a national league side he’s not likely to get into ours and this suggested his time was up, I think if we’re supposedly having a development squad next season we should sprinkle it with a few individuals who already know the place and each other and can help bed in new blood, Jones along with Greenslade and Lawrence should be the cornerstone outfield players to kick that side off. Obviously promising youth players like Dewsbury and Shaw will be expected to step up and in goal we will get a chance to see what Hall is like in a match situation. That still leaves several open spaces for the experimental triallists Pirate often pinpoints, the key point about those is if we’re reducing the playing budget significantly then the recruits to the dev squad have to be young, enthusiastic and cheap!

The Conteh deal took so long in January im looking forward to seeing who we finally bring in after the season has started and also who we might be able to add on a free transfer after the window closes.
Cant blame the new owners though because its like this every season. The sounds they are making suggest targets have been identified but everytime I think we have a plan it gets more chaotic

Would personally like to see (presuming Taylor goes back to his favoured 3-5-2) What's interesting is that there's not as many changes as I thought there might be. I think we have a solid core and if we make the right additions, I dont see why this team couldn't finish top 10

In terms of Jones, it's been suggested that Greenslade could be part of the team at Wigan as his loan clubs season has ended (not sure if he can?). Does anyone know if this is the same for Jones? I know Bromley have made the playoffs, will his loan continue until their season ends or is it just until the regular season finishes?

I think MT will bring in a new keeper ... Experienced agile Bear who will command his area and spread confidence through the defence.
Fully expecting one or two with Exeter links to be brought into the fold. Central defender and a midfielder'
I think he will look to move on Connolly + McCormick and even potentially Wilson + Hunt but who seriously will touch the last two ? We could be stuck with all four which would be frustrating. Grant is surely a MUST GO and Jevani Brown I think will be kept on.
If Ipswich get promoted I think Baggott could return either on Loan or permanent.
Surely we will offer Chris Martin another year but his disciplinary record might just trump that plan - We shall see.

A 3-5-2 or 5-3-2 whichever anyone wishes to call it needs proper specialist wingbacks - possibly the most important positions on the pitch to make that system work.

On the subject of keepers and returning loanees, one situation I’d be keeping an eye on is that of Joe Lumley’s at Southampton. He basically established himself as the second keeper, getting the cup games and manning the bench game after game banishing McCarthy to the stands. Before the game against Preston Bazuna does his ACL but Russell Martin does not promote Lumley from the bench slot, he leaves him there and recalls McCarthy from the stand to start and he still has the starting jersey. This suggests to me that there is a lack of confidence in Lumley at Saints, their supporters openly call McCarthy’near post’ because he’s so often beaten there, so there’s much puzzlement at this turn of events. Bazuna is out for 10 months at least so they need at least two decent number ones and I suspect if they get promoted into the PL neither McCarthy or Lumley will be considered good enough even as the bench warmer. Hence if Saints progress it might be worth mentioning to Lumley and his agent that there is a slot available at the club where he first really drew attention to his capabilities to hold down a starting keeper position at an EFL club. He must still have happy memories of the place.

Genuinely brilliant post. 1) Identify a player that is realistic 2) add credibility on the possibility of signing him 3) Know that he would instantly improve the team. Wages might be on the high side but he's 29 now so a three year contract would fit in with our plans to build sustainably.

My current thoughts on our first and (back up) for next season's squad. GK: Ward (New) RB: New (Hoole) CB: Taylor (New) CB: New - Baggott? (Connolly) LB: New (Gordon) CM: Conteh (Ward) CM: New (Finley) AM: Evans (McCormick/Brown) Wing: Thomas (Sinclair + New) Striker: New (Martin + New) 5 starters being new 6 existing is pretty big but not massive turnover. Defence and strikers the biggest task I get that “he’s one of our own” and everyone wants him to be a success but I’m not 100% convinced by Ward yet. He’s a good shot stopper but doesn’t really dominate his box and looks weak under a high ball - still early days so no way I’m going to write him off. I think we need to bring in big, more experienced keeper and let them have a fair fight for the number 1 shirt. Exactly the way I see Ward.

When you look at the players under contract (excluding options we haven't actioned)
Goalkeepers Jed Ward Matt Hall
Defenders James Wilson Connor Taylor James Connolly Jack Hunt
Midfielders Anthony Evans Kamil Conteh Luke McCormick Grant Ward Jerry Lawrence
Forwards Jevani Brown Luke Thomas
We'll need 12 players to take us to a 25-man squad, if playing a variation of 352 that looks something like:
1 x GK
2 x CB , 1 x RWB , 2 x LWB
2 x CM
4 x ST/LW/RW
That's including Lawrence as a first team regular and not accounting for someone buying Evans etc.

Wonder if this is the year we commit to and succeed with a 3-5-2 formation? Often managers preferred but never seems to work (for us)
What this could look like for Gas 24/25
GK - Dawson or Ward
Back 3 - Moore-Taylor-Baggott
DMs - 2 from Rossiter/Ward/Conteh
RWB - Thomas or Hunt
LWB - New or new!
AM - Evans or Hutchinson
Strikers - New/Martin and Aguilera/McCormick
Dont hate it....
EDIT: Needs more pace!
