That is a very tough definition of success. Historians, please correct me if I'm wrong here but these are the promotions we have had to division 2: 1952/53 (stayed up for 10 seasons) 1973/74 (stayed up for 7 seasons) 1989/90 (stayed up for 3 seasons) The fans that are viewing any managers success by getting us promoted are saying we have only had three successful managers at the club. Seems like a tough ask. Not sure many on here are judging managers success by getting us promoted, I think firstly we'd like to see us winning games (scoring goals helps!!), secondly playing attractive football, thirdly pushing for a top 10 finish with an outside chance of a top 6 finish, given the playing budget over the last couple seasons seems to have been sufficient to make all 3 possible I doubt think fans are asking for too much? As far as promotion if that is beyond the owners means they should say so instead of suggesting the Premiership was a possibility under their ownership. Would fans really not renew their season tickets if the ALS stated that establishing the club as a top 10 side was the aim over the next couple of seasons, when your figures suggest that we're use to life in L1!! attractive foo You might not Topper, however my hunch is that there are plenty on the forum that do think that way. I was even responding to one such comment. Hence this season after every game its been: We are brilliant we are going to get promoted. We are sh.it we are going to get relegated. All three managers had these type of comments. That all comes from an expectation gap, mainly fuelled by the grifter and how we bought into 'the best squad' rhetoric.

as a life long supporter of Bristol Rovers I think it possible we been given another dud to go down with other recent appointees. I'll let you consider those failures. Maybe Joe Barton did have his failings which is none of my business here, but I always felt confident in getting some sort of result. So for those happy with the present regime I have seen it all before. a word to the wise, please get used to the saying when results and performances are bad, please remember that "This is work in progress" How did you feel confident when JABs record read 9 wins in 30 games from Jan to his sacking? Was it because we played like Barcelona to the centre circle and back again without actually getting into the other half let alone threatening the opposition goal? JAB certainly had his failings, he is a failed L1 manager.

It shows that, at times, stats mean nothing. Outplayed totally. This is a manager issue as a good manager would get a performance out of this squad. I accept he’s going to be given a transfer window. I hope he uses it well. I thought he did get a performance out of the team. The forward line let him down by not putting the ball in the back of the net. I thought we played some good football at times. They score from their first shot on target in the 2nd half. That kind of says it all really. I had to watch from the iPad on Saturday but at the time I said this is the sort of game where we will have all the chances and lose 1-0. As soon as I typed it Collins scored.

it was always going to be a uphill struggle when you start a season with just one number 9. Barton cluttered up our midfield could he not have brought in a couple of young decent strikers instead , he had all summer to sign them . I know not signing JCH was a blow , but he may not have done any better than Martin anyway. Barton should have made sure we had a more potent attack than we did, that was a failing.

If it was that big an issue why did MT bring in three more midfielders but no strikers in January?

Like it or not JB tried to sign JCH, it was not his fault that the deal did not go through. There are two versions out there about what happened, feel free to decide for yourself which one you believe. JB then managed to bring in a free agent CM at the end of September and virtually single handedly he has got us enough points to survive. We and the club and MT knew we needed another striker in January as JM had got worse and worse as the season went on and it was the club and our present Manager who failed to do that. It’s totally obvious that we having been missing chances all season that any decent striker would bury and it’s mainly this reason in my opinion that is responsible for our present position. MT failed to do this in January and as Manager is now reaping what he sowed then and his interviews totally overlook his failure to recruit a striker and he continually blames injuries and inexperience for our present problems. You only have to look at the Rotherham forum to know who the fans blame for their relegation and many point out what many Rovers fans are saying about him.

So how will this season end, 11 games without a goal or win, can any manager really survive such an awful end to a season? Barton somehow survived after giving up and taking us to the bottom of the league.

I guess not if there was only 1 from Puddleworth 2nd 11 Paper Boys that was available I find your question really interesting and I went and had a look. All data is from www.transfermarkt.co.uk/league-one/transfers/wettbewerb/GB3/plus/?saison_id=2023&s_w=w&leihe=1&intern=0&intern=1So a few teams didn't sign any centre forwards in January, they were: Barnsley Blackpool Peterborough Portsmouth Port Vale Reading Then there was the one we know about: Bolton - Aaron Collins played 15 scored 6 (not sure about assists, he has 10 but I thought he had 10 with us and I'm sure I saw him cross the ball in his first game for a goal). Burton: Antwoine Hackford - 6 games 0 goals Kyle Hudlin - 5 games 0 goals Ademola Ola-Adebomi - 13 games 1 goal and 2 assists Joe Hugill - 14 games 1 goal and 3 assists Cambridge: Lyle Taylor - 1 game 0 goals Macauley Bonne - 11 games 0 goals Carlisle: Georgie Kelly - 3 games 0 goals Luke Armstrong - 17 games 3 goals 2 assists Charlton: Freddy Ladapo - 14 games 1 goal 1 assist Connor Wickham - 1 game Cheltenham Town: Matty Taylor - 8 Games 4 goals Joe Nuttall - 10 games 1 goal 1 assist Derby: Dwight Gayle - 6 games 3 goals 1 assist Exeter: Mo Eisa - 11 games 1 goal Fleetwood: Tommy Lonergan - 4 games 0 goals Ronan Coughlan - 11 games 2 goals Leyton Orient: Daniel Adu-Adjei - 8 games 0 goals Khan Edwards - 6 games 0 goals Lincoln: Joe Taylor - 15 games 9 goals and 3 assists Northampton - No centre forwards signed Oxford: Will Goodwin - 8 games 1 goal Tyler Burry - 5 games 0 goals Shrewsbury: Tom Bloxham - 14 games 2 goals Stevenage: Vadaine Oliver - 14 games 0 goals 1 assist Wigan: Charlie Kelman - 10 games 1 goal 1 assist Wycombe: Richard One - 4 games 1 goal 1 assist Gideon Kodak - 6 games 0 goals So, the top three are: Joe Taylor - Storming it for Lincoln (Loan from Luton) Matty Taylor - FFS Luke Armstrong (bought from Harrogate town. Should have done a swap deal for Belshaw!) Based on goals and assists (not a per game ratio) I would therefore say that the value isn't really there in January and personally, I think waiting until the summer is the correct strategy (assuming we do sign one or two)

It's hard to believe 16(?) other L1 clubs signed strikers, some even more than one but we couldn't manage to sign one, even though we banked £750K from selling one.

Or, alternatively, well done gasify, thanks for doing the research and posting it. It doesn’t look as if any League 1 club got good value for money on their striker signings in January. Which tends to confirm what is often said about not getting real value for money in January is probably true. UTG!

Up to this point only three teams have got any value and funnily enough, one of those players ain't welcome round these parts. So, yes. At this point, us not signing a centre forward has been proved to be the correct option by 81% of teams that signed a centre forward.
