Bristol Rovers have today further bolstered their front line by bringing in striker Matt Taylor. The 24-year-old has agreed terms to join Rovers when his contract runs out at Forest Green at the end of the month. The striker, who has been at Forest Green for the last three seasons, turned down interest from Oxford, Mansfield, Chester and Kidderminster to come to the Memorial Stadium. Manager Darrell Clarke said: “Matty is a striker that plays off the shoulder and he has a proven goalscoring record in Non League Football. He is an intelligent footballer. “I went to watch him last season and he stood out, and I have been chasing him for a few weeks. “There have been a lot of clubs after him, but he chose us for the right reasons and he ticked the right boxes for me. Matt began his career in the youth team at Oxford before joining Southern League South & West Division side North Leigh. Whilst there he scored over 80 goals in two seasons. He joined Forest Green in September 2011, after spending a period on trial at Cheltenham Town. Matt is a current member of the England C squad, and scored three goals in two games for his country against Hungary and Sparta Prague B last month. Chairman Nick Higgs said: “We are delighted to welcome Matt to Bristol Rovers. “Darrell has started to rebuild his squad for next season, and Matt is another important addition to the side.” Interviews with Matt and Darrell Clarke will be available on Gas Player and You Tube later today. Strange one, everyone seems to rate him reading about online - but his record last season was pretty dire.

Yea 9 goals and 5 assists in 32 appearances doesn't sound brilliant...
He must have something about him though for a couple of decent L2 sides to have been chasing him. I would be surprised to see another striker come in now unless 1 goes. We now have Harrold, Brunt, White and Taylor as well as Gow who can play as a CF.
Bring on the wingers now!

I hope DC saw more from him on the pitch than the stats suggest...
...not a downer on a new signing, just the PR (for obvious reasons) doesn't mention he hasn't scored for Forest Green since Sept 2013...last season six from nine were for Chester (on loan) and when recalled he didn't score for FGR
...I hope DC has had him watched and/or knows him, because on stats alone he's not the signing who will spur us into the top five...

If one of our strikers had done that well we'd still be in the Football League. He's young and turned down a couple of FL clubs so either we're paying too much again or Darrell is selling the club well to potential players.

Looks like Chester were also after Matty Taylor according to James Norwood.
If you can understand the code!

Just being pedantic once more, but i) not seen any evidence he turned down FL club(s) or that they were chasing him, and ii) he did most of his good work for CHESTER (not FGR last year), and moved to them right when we needed a striker. As I mentioned above, I hope DC has seen more in him than the statistics suggest...

No idea why I completely blanked the claims made in that...

Few clips of him on twitter - looks like a tidy finisher.
Just have to wait and see what he's like. Think that's the strikeforce sorted now.

Ex-Blues loan ace joins the Gas Jun 16, 2014 13:46 By Jim Green Chester FC target Matty Taylor has signed for Conference Premier new boys Bristol Rovers. Taylor had a hugely successful loan spell at the Swansway Chester Stadium last season, scoring six times in seven games. He had been due to remain with the Blues until the end of the season but his parent club Forest Green Rovers recalled him. His contract with Forest Green expires at the end of the month and the striker turned down the offer of a new deal. Blues boss Steve Burr knows Taylor well from his role as England C assistant manager and was understood to be very keen to bring him back to the club on a permanent basis. But the 24-year-old will be making the switch to the Memorial Stadium when his contract at Forest Green expires, with the Gas claiming he turned down the Blues, Oxford United, Mansfield Town and Kidderminster Harriers. Bristol boss Darrell Clarke said: "There have been a lot of clubs after him, but he chose us for the right reasons and he ticked the right boxes for me." Although Burr would not confirm he wanted to sign Taylor, the manager did say he had identified a number of potential forwards and will now step up his attempts to bring in another of his targets. www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/chester-fc-matty-taylor-signs-7274641

Just the type of player we need IMO. A eager young fit player who has loads of potential and lots to prove,as opposed to the usual overweight half fit journeyman here to top up his pension pot. Welcome to the Gas Matt.

So that's 2 smallish strikers that like to play on the shoulder of the last defender so it must be DC's intention to get the ball down and play with a bit of style, none of the one dimensional crap we've had to put up with for the last 5 or 6 years hopefully.welcome on board Matt, let's get in some good wide men and creativity to supply these lads now.
