He accepted his contract this summer knowing full well he was out of favour with DC, he may even known deep down that he's not good enough for Div 2, not sure charlatan is the right word but I doubt he accepted the contract thinking he would be first choice this season. Why wouldn't he have thought that? DC didn't inform Mildenhall until the Yeovil game, he started against Northampton and Brum! With Puddy injured he was first choice. If DC had informed Mildenhall in June that he was looking for a first-choice keeper, then fair enough. But he didn't, and I think it's a poor bit of management to wait until the season has started to sort it out.

Given he ended last season as No 2 in a Conference team why would he think he was going to be No 1 a division higher? He probably knew better than most age had caught up with him & /or he was the wrong type of goalie to fit in with DC plans, the fact he's refusing to move on now suggests he knew the score.

The first team players that stayed were: Mildy - probably could have got a contract at another league 2 club at that stage, but on good wages and late in his career so very understandable that he stayed, especially as he was under contract for another year with an option of a further year based on appearances. Lockyer - very early in his career, had just signed a new contract weeks before the end of season. Clarke - same as Lockyer Harrison - transfer listed so we wanted rid of him, but on a long contract and good wages for one who was unproven so unlikely anyone would have come in for him. Brown - established as a solid performer at league 2 level who was still young, could definitely have found another club. Signed a new contract with us despite relegation, whereas the others were all under contract. So of those, I think only Brown deserves credit for loyalty. Mildy possibly could have gone but it is likely he would have had to take a wage cut and probably just a simple one year deal elsewhere, so easy to see why he stayed. The others were highly unlikely to leave for different reasons. You forgot McChrystal and Parkes both could have gone, but choose to stay and deserve credit. Good point! I have an awful memory, as my wife keeps reminding me! I think they were both under contract, but yes, you are right, and especially with Parkes, who is still young and very probably could have got a deal at a league 2 club had he wanted to leave.

Mildly being dropped suddenly the night before Yeovil had nothing to do with ability.
