Simple economics and certainly not DC's fault

DC has a budget to work to...if he finds a player that fits for us but we can't meet the wage then we have to look further Simple economics and certainly not DC's fault DC also quite rightly points out that player demands will drop as time goes on. FFP has mean't players are dropping down the pyramid as squad sizes get smaller. On one hand you could say some clubs are snapping up the best players first. Well, on the other you could say those leaving it until last will get the better players who couldn't get anything from a higher league. He said he wanted his squad in place by the start of pre season. So he has 4 left, is it really the end of the world? Its great we are getting honest pros who give 100%, without 3 year contracts and big wages. About time.

I don't even reckon he has a budget to work to frankly. I'm beginning to think it's made up as we go along. Working to a budget sounds a bit 'thought out' for our mob. When did he get told what the budget was? You know, considering about a month ago we were still counting the cost of relegation and all that.

Maybe DC has identified plenty of players but has been turned down by the money men? As for JW not believing we needed a striker? If that is even true, I would agree. What we needed was a couple of players to supply the forwards. Gow was beginning to look decent but we needed a winger desperately imo. RD. Your 3rd paragraph is spot on. What the he'll were they thinking? Agreed - fact is, we may have even avoided relegation if the budgeting had been done. I.e. if we had done the budgeting by November/December, we could of said "right, looks like it could cost us £1.5m if we went down. Therefore, if we spend £300k now guaranteeing we won't, we could still be £1.2m better of if we do survive". Obviously completely made up figures on my part, but you get the point. If you don't do the budgeting, you can make scenario based decisions. Utterly shocking and I will never forgive the BoD for that. Shambolic beyond belief - if you've got a finance director who doesn't budget, what exactly is he there to do?? Unbelievable. RoverDrive - you make budgeting for relegation sound easy! Oh wait a minute, it is!!! How the FD remains in his position is beyond belief and I trust Nick Higgs review has included a plan far beyond next month!!!

The best players are signed up quickly. Whilst we were arseing about calculating budgets and the financial impact of relegation due to our incompetent financial director players were getting signed up. DC made statements of intent he hasnt lived up to which for me was a mistake on his part. The reality of non league football as he should know is lots of players are part time and would not move to us for a tiny wage. In addition full time players are unlikely to relocate for a 1 year deal and small wages. Decent offers should have been submitted the first week after relegation. He needs a plan b and fast. Either we need to adjust our wage structure or we need to sign a few older league players. Get on the phone to Jamie Cuteton. As for his comments about contacts for loan players, if thats true why are they not here now gelling with the squad ? not sure the best loan players are signed up quickly - maybe they stay at their clubs hoping to force their way into the first team and it is only when they realise that they are not going to feature that they look for a season out on loan.

In that instance i was not refering to loan players. Our dilly dallying whilst we worked out the impact of relegation meant we missed out on players

Just seen this, which was posted on the IF by somebody who spoke to DC after the Cheltenham game:
"Also I will add quickly DC said he is likely to go with Kieran Preston the youth team GK as No2 but as the conference is only 5 subs he will not go with a GK on the bench in a lot of games and if Mildenhall picks up an injury he will use the loan market! Seemed like his budget has been cut massively since he was 1st informed of budgets for the season! Also He said he thinks Smith is not 100% sure that he wants to leave but Smith felt he should say that he is thinking about going with the clubs best interest at heartache to give us time to get someone else!"
Will be very interesting to see what answers are given for the budget related questions at the Q&A.

How about we just wait patiently, instead of panicking? Clarke's said he needs four players. He's said he wants more depth. Just wait ffs. I've never known such an impatient bunch of supporters as us Gasheads. It will come together.

But please remember we've heard those words 4 seasons in a row and it's cost us dearly. You can't blame supporters for worrying. History proves unfortunately it doesn't "Come Together" very often. Otherwise we wouldn't be on our umpteenth manager in 5 years. Good tidings to you young sir. UTG

Buckle, McGhee and Ward never said things like that. We were all happy with Buckle's summer, if I recall. McGhee chased Constable all summer, but otherwise seemed content with his squad, as were we considering our strong finish. Ward signed the three players that made a difference the season before, and we were all relatively happy. I agree with you, we've heard excuses and empty promises for too long, but Clarke really doesn't have anything to hide behind if he doesn't bring in another three/four signings, because he's more or less said that's what he's going to do.

Very true mate. At the end of the day Clarke must sign players he chooses and as many as he feels, and like it or not he will be judged on what really matters - RESULTS.
As i've said before, the talking and debating will soon be over and quite simply it's time to - STEP UP AND PLAY!

How isnt 6 years of BS and a drop into non league a good excuse for being impatient? Our first game is in 15 working days and we currently have 14 players ffs. If you want to experience footballing impatience, speak to a few teds. They would never put up with the sh** that we have.

have to agree with si here, we are going into the last fortnight of preparation with bare bones....
and there isn't any argument for quality over quantity here either because we haven't seen anything resembling quality in blue and white yet....
i'm feeling nervous....
