I'll go on record now as saying I'm not sure how he would do in the championship to be honest but I'm positive he would do well in league one.

I actually think he probably could cut it in the Championship but it would be a gamble. We've seen players careers peter out after making similar moves because he could end up a bench warmer getting hardly any game time.
He would definitely score goals in league one, of that I'm sure but I would hope he can see we're not far away from having a squad capable of playing at that level ourselves.
I'm confident Clarke will take us up, be it this season or next and I would hope Taylor would want to be a part of that.

I'd be gone like a flash.
He has one career and that's it.
Hopefully he will sign an extension to guarantee us a fee before he goes.
Nice fee for a free player. Win/win.

I wish dc didn't make the vardy comparison tbh to trigger press attention, but it was only a matter of time b4 clubs noticed his blistering form. Matty is very much a confidence player though so i can see why dc would try to boost it further

Scared witless of him going. Despite t bones continuous putting down of Taylor there is a real question mark that being 'who will score when he's gone'? Well be back to having no goals.

I'd take no less than a Trillion dollars for him.

Not really a win/win because I doubt Clarke will see much of that money and very difficult to replace players of Taylor's quality at this level. Also, how much would we consider a decent fee. Anything less than 500k is an insult for a player with Taylor's all round ability and goal scoring record. I personally wouldn't consider offers less than 750k but realistically are we likely to get that. Taylor is better player than Hoskins in my opinion and he's also younger and far less injury prone so I guess you never know but we were in league one when we sold him to Brighton. I hope he stays. As I said, maybe it's better to be a star at Rovers than a bench warmer in the Championship. We're clearly a team on the up and I'm confident Clarke will eventaully take us to league one. If I was Taylor I'd want to be a part of that. He's probably settled in the area having played for Forest Green before joining the Gas and Bristol's not far from his family in Oxford. Maybe this break is a good time to get a few of our better players and consistent performers like Taylor tied down to new deals.

I am more interested in getting confirmation that Lockyer has signed a new contract.
I'd be happy if Taylor also signs a new contract but I think that depends on what wages we offer and he is offered elsewhere.

He has half a year left on his contract. We'll be lucky to get £250k.

For years people have moaned that we should be picking up cheap non league talent and selling on to make profit so the club is more self sufficient.
Now we have its a problem!
I don't want to see him leave but accept that's part of the game and it's far better for all concerned than signing players on the wane with no sell on value.

Maybe what is more important than the actual fee is adding a lofty sell on clause. As if he was to score goals at a higher level then his value would shoot up. £250k plus a 20/25% sell on clause? Don't think that would be far out given his current contract.

The fact that someone may be able to prize him away for maybe 25% of his actual value is a concern and until he signs a new contract, a real possibility.

I really hope that doesn't happen but in my 30 years of supporting us it's what always has happened. UTG

If I was looking for a new striker as a manager of a Championship/League one club, I would be going through the list of top scorers in league 2. Jay Simpson 27 - Had a chance at a higher level but not established himself enough. Barry Corr 30 - Regular goalscorer at lower level, unlikely to improve Jabo Ibehre 32 - Never scored regularly and too old to progress now Jish Windass 21 - Promising young striker scoring regularly. Interesting. Marc Richards 33 - Decent goalscorer but at lower level and too old to progress. Only Josh Windass would be more of interest than Matty T. Hence why he has got to be hot property IMO. Clubs will be alrted to the fact his contract runs out soon and know he will be a cheap gamble. If scouts actually come to watch him then they will probably be even more interested as there is more to his game than just his goalscoring.

We need to send out a message. What usually happens is when one leaves, others start to follow. If we can tie Taylor and Lockyer down then it sends a real message out.
