Cristian Montano scored his first goal of the season as Bristol Rovers ended their three-game sequence without an away win in confident fashion at Meadow Lane this afternoon.
Montano, who had arrived as a third minute substitute to replace the injured Liam Lawrence, fired a shot under Notts County goalkeeper Scott Loach in the 43rd minute to offer Rovers some tangible reward for their opening period dominance.
Lee Brown doubled the advantage minutes after the restart by placing a clinical left-footed shot past Scott Loach to bring a well-worked corner routine to a successful conclusion as angry Notts County supporters remonstrated with manager Jamie Fullarton.
Rovers, though, maintained their composure amid the highly-charged atmosphere to keep their promotion bid on track by completing back-to-back victories to suggest that they are returning to form ahead of what is certain to be a tense run-in between now and the end of the season.
The result was enough to see Rovers remain sixth in League Two, but it a return to form for the likes of man-of-the-match Chris Lines, Lee Mansell and Matty Taylor and a confident collective performance that also saw manager Darrell Clarke leave Meadow Lane a happy man on Saturday night.
He had made only one change to the side that convincingly saw off the challenge of Hartlepool United on Tuesday night, but a second had to made a matter of two minutes after kick-off as Lawrence pulled up with a calf injury and had to be withdrawn.
The early change did little to prevent Rovers from making a promising start; dominating possession of the ball and in full control of proceedings across the opening exchanges.
Lines looked in the mood to burst from midfield and it was one such foray that almost led to an early opening goal. Easter, though, was unable to convert the rebound after Scott Loach had parried away a Montano effort after the Columbia was picked out by Lines at the far post.
Lines was involved again in another move through the middle of the pitch that ended with Bodin shooting straight at Loach, yet Notts County – despite failing to win at Meadow Lane since December 12 – certainly had their moments before Montano broke the deadlock.
They looked most dangerous down the left-hand side; winger Jason Banton teasing James Clarke into a footrace over five yards at every opportunity.
On one such occasion, County were unfortunate not to profit after Banton had ghosted past James Clarke and fired a ball across the face of goal only for right-back Wes Atkinson to marginally miss out on applying a finish from a matter of inches after making a lung-busting run to the far post.
It was much the same story some minutes later when, down the other side, Adam Campbell fed Jon Stead, who used his body well to steal a yard on Mark McChrystal to deliver another tantalising ball across the face of goal. This time Izale McLeod was the unfortunate player unable to bring a similar move to a telling conclusion.
Still, Rovers retained a firm grip on proceedings with both Billy Bodin and Taylor looking spritely in attack. Taylor, in particular, showed the sort of movement and flicks that suggested he was back to somewhere near his best and it was a neat bit of skill that created the opening for Montano.
In a tight space with defenders around him, Taylor did well to hold the ball up before sliding a neat pass for Montano to run on to. The wideman still had a lot to do, but showed quick fit to outsmart a Notts County defender before firing firmly under Loach from a tight angle.
With just minutes remaining before half-time, it was a good time to take the lead and Brown rubbed salt into the wound soon after the restart by doubling the advantage following a save by Loach to deny Lines that resulted in a corner.
It ended in a goal – one straight off the training ground – as Brown hurtled forward from the halfway unopposed to collect Lines corner kick on the edge of the area before planting a left-foot shot past Loach from all of 20 yards.
County briefly rallied but the atmosphere started to turn poisonous soon after Brown’s goal. Supporters in the Spion Kop unfurled a 'Fullarton Out' banner and raised a chorus of "get out of our club". On the pitch, McLeod headed a good chance wide from an Andy Campbell cross before the pair were replaced by Fullarton in a bid to claw a way back into the game.
At the other end, meanwhile, it was a mystery how Easter managed to finish the afternoon without a goal to show for his efforts. Loach palmed one effort away before coming out on top in a one-on-one, while full-back Blair Adams also cleared another attempt off the goal-line before Easter was replaced by Rory Fallon late on.
