it is a bit confusing having a 79 and a 1979 posting on here....
I can't remember which one of you was talking about danny coles lately, but I suggest you talk about this confusion sensibly in the car park....

Anyone ever drive above 20 in the new zones? No? Jumped an Amber light? Used their mobile at the petrol station? God forbid watching someone you know leave the pub to drive without saying something. I'm sure some of us deliberately confuse condoning with reasoning. One of my former colleagues was a neighbour of Tom Parkes in Frenchay, he told me he was often seen coming home from training with a McDonalds (other brands available) after training. My suspicion is that was more likely to be the subject of DC's criticism of him, not alcohol abuse. I believe the days of a drinking culture within the club are much diminished, Danny Coles and David Pipe were of that ilk. Tom Lockyer and the young bloods are of a different stock. Just my thoughts on the subject, the only real fact is the take away angle.

These days you just can not drink at all...it's that simple. Also if you drink the night before there is a good chance you will be over the limit on the morning commute. Upto six months in prison. Driving ban. Unlimited fines. Should be a good reason not to do it ,regardless of the other issues of endangering yourself and others.
For most people one pint of lager will put you over the limit. I won't jump on the bandwagon pointing fingers because in many of our youth the limit was much higher. Most people considered two pints as a safe option and many drank twice that and didn't consider themselves a drunk driver . And steering and brakes were not as good back then too !
I would say that considering the wages players get he could afford a taxi......

Speaking as a driving instructor the ONLY safe level of alcohol in your system if you are going to drive is 0.

Parkes also took his GF's car w/o consent & insurance, it wasn't just a case of having one two many and taking a chance he was probably miles over the limit at the time and was lucky he wasn't involved in a more serious accident.

Not half as lucky as those he drove past.

I'm sure some of us deliberately confuse condoning with reasoning. Isn't doing a few mph over the limit or having 2 pints and driving a little different than being well over the limit and driving and crashing? If he'd just been a couple of units over the limit then I could understand people defending it. None of us are complete angels but surely there are degrees of offending that most of us are entitled to think is a bit too far to be accepted?

I think that Tom can consider himself extremely fortunate to have escaped a custodial sentence for this. Another Magistrate may well have decided to make an example of him.
It seems he had had an argument with his girlfriend prior to this incident. I believe Parkes has a young child with this lady. I feel especially sorry for the infant. He or she is just as much a victim in all of this and it's always the children caught up in these incidents who are the innocents.
For the child's sake, I hope the parents can sort this out.

Very unlikely to get prison, Magistrates rely on advice from the legal adviser and laid down guidelines. They also would not jail someone for a first offence, crimes serious enough to warrant that are dealt with by the crown court. They must have thought he was capable of learning his lesson by offering the ban reducing drink awareness course.

Clever too that he's disguised his thick Mansfield accent. That's thick as in heavy rather than stupid

No he'd be a walking accident in league 1. Good conference player - average league 2 - poor league 1 I reckon.

Yeah league 2 is full of centre halves who probably aren't good enough to step up to league 1 and Parkes is one of them. Thing is we've got rid and brought Hartley in who I think is good enough. He's also played this level before so he's got the experience.
