Could this Chelsea team be the best we have ever faced with multiple European cup winners and Europe championship, World Cup winners in the possible starting line up. Can anyone name a better one.

Liverpool played their first team home and away against us in the 90 FA cup games so they were strong but other than that it might well be the strongest side we've played in my life time. We played the busby babes too don't forget, and beat them.

Yes the 4 0 beating of Man United babes was before my time but they sadly never got the chance to win trophies.

The thread title probably over-excited a few Southend fans prior to opening..

On its day the team we faced the last time we played in front of over 40,000 at a league ground must have been a good team, as 40 years on they are still mostly well known names from that era.

1964 I went to Old Trafford for a fourth round FA cup tie. Man U had Bobby Charlton, Dennis Law and George Best in their line up. Rovers lost 4-1 with Man U scoring all five goals! Also they had a player injured, and in the time before subs, injured players had to stay on as walking wounded. To rub it in while waiting for the train home, the local rag football special came out with the headline "Ten Man Reds Walk It" and it was true.

it wasn't full strength mate, it was Becks, Solskjaer, Scholes, Blomqvist and David May. The rest of the team were youngsters, like Culkin, Terry Cooke and Chris Casper (?)

The Newcastle FA cup team? After that then I'd say the Liverpool 1990 FA cup team, full first team, and they were very very lucky at Twerton.

I can still remember the picture in the Post the next morning, of Steve Staunton's legs wrapped around Mehew's, as clear a penalty as you'd ever wish to see. Obviously not given as we were playing a top side...... Walters in the Liverpool team that day, too.

The Liverpool team was good and as you said lucky lucky Liverpool but we could be facing fabregas and Pedro with more honours between them than probably that entire Liverpool team

It was David Borrows, not Staunton, but here's the highlights, looks as clear a penalty today as it was back then!

we played a full strength leeds united team away from home in the 1970"s in the fa cup when they were in there pomp. also the stoke city team that beat us 4-2 at eastville after being 4-0 up at half time were very strong and won the league cup i think that year.

Yes the 4 0 beating of Man United babes was before my time but they sadly never got the chance to win trophies. they won the league in 1956 and 57 with average age of about 21 so they did win stuff before munich

We're bound to have played a game in training "possibles" versus "probables" so the "possibles" are the best side we have ever played. This Chelsea team may well be the most expensive though.
