What possible use are they? How can a train without passengers, possibly make a profit? Baffling.

I'd have sold it all off years ago and spent the money propping up a failing Tory ran economy.

We are not far out with our ramblings as it is disclosed that the train company are actually saving money during the strikes !
"Taxpayers are footing a £50 million bill for the biggest series of rail strikes in a generation, while the company in charge of the train line stands to save money, it has emerged. The walkout by drivers and conductors on the Southern Rail line led to trains being cancelled for 300,000 commuters in the South East on Tuesday, prompting ministers to indicate that they are prepared to strengthen anti-strike laws. It has emerged that, because of a deal struck with Southern by the Government, the cost of the disruption will be borne by the taxpayer."

Unlike every other rail franchise, Southern are paid a fee to run the trains and the government collects the ticket revenue. The other regional operators make their money from ticket sales.
So the strike costs Southern nothing and the taxpayer foots the bill from lost revenue and compensation.
Therefore, Southern have nothing to lose by holding out against the unions. I'm guessing that they have been told to do so.

Think it's part of the franchise ie they have to provide x amount of trains per route if they don't they get fined so cheaper to run an empty train

Who'd have thought the unions haven't learned fec all since the 70's Would find it amusing in one way if the country went back to 3 day weeks and the rest of it, wonder how many people would cope and get through it these days. I think the compensation culture we live in doesn't help workers in many services, or prices on the street, so you could say that it's the workers themselves that are holding back their own pay, what i mean by that is if something is late or cancelled you get compo, so thereby having a knock on effect, which in turn means lower profit for companies, so less for workers Not saying all compo is a bad idea but the stupid low end stuff like above has a detrimental effect on so much other stuff Also not saying that all companies are perfect
