I'm so happy with lockyer's form since sweeney and Lumley's arrival, But I really can't understand the thinking of a diagonal lump forward after everyone working so hard to retain the ball...week in and week out you see him in the right back position and gaffney calling feet up the wing and he has lines or Clarke to hit but he limps it forward to the other wing to james or it use to be the snake and 9/10 it's straight back to the opposition and putting everyone out of position and on the back foot? ? Surely the coaching staff must see this as every week everyone around me are saying the same moan " here it goes straight back to them" He's now coming into his own apart from this and it's so annoying for his sake and what it does to the game when he's more than capable of hitting feet...

Well after successive promotions and knocking on the door for playoffs this season. Long live the diagonal lump!

Lockyer is much improved since Sweeny joined us.
I'm happy with his form.

As a centre half the 1st thing I want him to do is defend which since Sweeney has arrived he's done very well. I think he'd be the 1st to admit his distribution is the weakest part of his game but having said that I think that's improved as well. He looks a lot more comfortable on the ball now than he did in the conference season. Still only young plenty of time for that to get better

If he and DC think his distribution is not where it should be at this stage of his career, then taking no chances is definitely the way forward. He improves his game so quickly you just know by this time next year he'll have mastered it anyway! Trust in Tom! UTG!

Reminds me of people criticising Haldane week after week but didn't have the balls to criticise Trollope for picking him. Simple answer is he's either doing what DC is instructing him to do or DC is letting him get away with it.

Occasionally in some games it's overdone imo but to be honest nothing wrong in this. If, as a centre half you see either your forwards pull wider in between their Fullback and CB it's a useful "out" ball.
If Gaffney or James wins or even. Challenges well then you have pulled a CB wide, the key when doing this is pressuring the second ball also. As Norton said long live this lol two promotions and the style of football we play is as good on the eye now as in a long time...mix your game up and play the diag at the right time!!

On the whole yesterday we worked hard to get the ball out to the full backs asap.
Would we prefer it if we arsed around with the ball like Chesterfield did?

Ask his management team whether they are happy with it

Yeah i'd rather he gave it a diagonal lump than try to cruyff turn the forward and get mugged, but I know what the OP is saying in that to succeed to the highest level Tom will need to improve this part of his game.

Its percentage football imo,a short pass into midfield looks good but if its misplaced you can concede a goal in seconds just like man city have so many times but the long diagonal can cause problems to opposition but at worse gives them possession a long way from your own goal. personally i think we have about the right mix of playing out from the back including tom and playing long in line with the technical ability of the players we have. Dont want us slavishly playing out from the back like swindon and being made to look stupid constantly being closed down and giving the ball away.

Toms passing has got much better since the Conference days. Then, although being a very good defender, his distribution was the weakest part of his game. He has got better at passing esp as our play is generally through the midfield and he usually, when I've seen him, does this and gives a simple pass. The diagonal long ball is ok as a get out and he doesn't overdo it imo. UTG!

Is he though. I think thats the issue, his passing to feet has improved but saying that, from the standard it was a couple years ago, it wasnt hard to improve on.

Tom's passing the ball is probably what will keep him here as it is much more important as you move up the Leagues.

Good to see we are addressing the major issues players have to improve as they go up the leagues ............ or we go back down again Mark Appreciate your point of view, but a couple of counters: 1. He has improved 2. We are not in any danger of going down this season. UTG
