I'd rather have a striker who plays well every week but doesn't score enough than a striker who is inconsistent but scores now and again. Playing well doesn't win matches. Scoring does. It's kind of the goal of the game if you will. But James working hard helps tire the opposition and create space for the midfield etc (look at Oxford as an example.) Also James has played his part in helping us a defensive unit IMO.

Plenty of players are out of contract better than James, Miller for one.
A lot of people on here are saying we should get rid of Harrison, at least he has actually been a goal threat this season.
I really don't know what has changed with James since he scored all those great goals for Hartlepool, shame really but he is still young so plenty of time for him personally to rediscover that, but can we afford to have a striker who doesn't score in the meantime?
I'd rather have a striker who plays well every week but doesn't score enough than a striker who is inconsistent but scores now and again. Does James play well every week? From what I have seen he gets bullied by defenders and appears too lightweight. Id say Gaffney offers more than James without scoring regularly.
We would have made the play offs had we kept Taylor imo, that is the difference between having a goalscorer and not having one.

If we're comparing him to Taylor though then he is on a hiding to nothing. We are better as a defensive unit with James in the team than Taylor. He also creates opportunities.

Of course people will compare, he was touted as Taylors replacement.
We are better defensively since Taylor left because we brought in Lumley and Sweeney. I don't want James creating opportunities I want him scoring them.

If Luke James is availiable for free/next to nothing then I can't imagine too many better options to be honest. He's got the right attitude and I think he can improve with us. Plenty of players are out of contract better than James, Miller for one.

He played in the hole just behind the front 2 at Hartlepool when he was at his most prolific, ghosting in off of the strikers shoulders. DC has never set us up that way (at least I can't remember if he has)

Predominantly yes but James is a lot harder working than Taylor. James is a lot younger than Taylor, I always seen him more as a project this season than to come in than become an instant 20 goal a season striker. Granted, I would have liked him to have scored a few by now but I believe when one will come then they will flow. All about confidence as a striker.

It concerns me that he has failed to score goals at 4 separate clubs now

It's a difficulty call as I like the lad's effort but on balance I don't think he will bring the necessary goal return needed from any forward. If I thought he could knock in 9 or 10 goals a season then with his work rate he might be worth a place but I can't see that happening so with a heavy heart I'd let him return to Peterborough at the end of the year. Sorry....not even as a squad player.

The reality is that every player is a squad player, I like him his pace worries defenders and I fully remember the snake when he first joined very few thought he was good enough

Then put the ball in front of him not a head height with his back to goal

All about opinions - I wouldn't say Miller is better than James - he's had more non league mediocre clubs than are in my golf bag. He couldn't crack it at Luton a couple of years ago and was released. We're a 1st division side and if we are looking at a 28 year old with one 'good season' behind him in the National league (and commanding a sizeable transfer fee) I would be pretty disappointed to be honest. Harrison a goal threat - (how many matches has he scored in) - I don't think so!! Again IMO a player for the 'to be released list' sadly - the guy has just failed to reach his potential in the last two seasons - he may make it somewhere else though.

I agree Ellis is hardly prolific but having scored in 5 games this season (inc those 4 goals v Northampton) compared to James he is a much bigger goal threat. Its up to DC to decide if James will start scoring goals and get him in the summer. If we did want him but Posh want a fee id hope we would look elsewhere. He definitely needs to toughen up a bit but reminds me a bit of Lewis Haldane who came onto the scene scoring goals then his career nosedived a bit.

Still short of goals. Don't think we can justify signing him unless he gets a couple before the end of the season short of goals! he has none zero zilch i think?

Posh will want a fee for him as they paid £500k for him and will want to recover some of that so defo no from me You wont get a transfer fee for a striker that dosnt score goals.

What's this squad player nonsense?
Every player in the squad needs to be good enough to play in the first team surely??
