Other than following the Gas what do other members do for hobbies
For me I keep tropical fish have 350 litre planted tank hoping to add some Discus soon (well it beats the boredom until the new season starts) I used to keep snakes and lizards but my new partner doesn't like them and I'm banned from having any lol
My other hobby which I've now made a career from, is Photography with my main passion being wildlife and macro wildlife shots it pays the bills and keeps the wolves from the door

I have a Saltwater aquarium, 650 litres. I currently have about twenty fish and a few smallish corals as I only started this tank last December after upgrading from a 112 litre tank. This stems from my other passion which is/was Scuba Diving. However, I had a heart attack three years ago and haven't dived since but I'm hoping to get the ok from the Doc's to start again soon. I also read a lot and normally get through a book every couple of weeks.

My fruit trees and vegetable patch keep me busy. If it's raining and I have to stay in then I still make the odd airfix model - mainly aeroplanes.

I returned to keeping fish couldn't believe how much technology has moved on since I last kept fish. This time I'm doing it on a slightly smaller scale my last tank was 1100 litres or 240 gallons 8 foot long 2 foot wide and 30 inches deep very big tank took 4 people to move it the stand wasn't much lighter either filtration was 2 pond pumps. All this just to house one fish my prized 2ft Amazon Red Tailed Catfish couldn't put anything else in with him as he would eat them tame as anything even the tank that size was still to small for him

I had to have a brick base built lucky enough the living room was a concrete based floor all sorts of problems if it had been floorboards. I still remember the fun we had getting the tank into the living room had to remove the large bottom glass unit just to get it in

I bet even in a 1100 litre tank you needed some serious filtration for that beast !

I bet even in a 1100 litre tank you needed some serious filtration for that beast ! I had a 6' x 2' x 2' tank split into 2 sections in the base acting as a sump and the bottom of the tank was drilled either end in the corners with 2 weirs. I had the brick base built as I didn't trust the metal stand even though it was heavy grade steel I just had visions of the welds giving way and the whole house being flooded. Pond pumps were the only thing power enough to provide the LPH turnover required for the filtration and if I remember rightly think each of pumps were pumping around 3000 lph so yes some serious filtration also the good thing with having sumps in the base all the heating could be located in the sump as well. Weekly water changes were great fun 25% of 240 gallons hmmmm

I started out with freshwater and moved into the Dark Salty Side ! I've got a single return pump pushing 7,000lph from the Sump, and four circulation pumps in the back pushing a combined total of about 8,000lph. The Saltwater environment needs a greater turnover. Typically, a saltwater tank needs a minimum turnover of X 10 the capacity, and with corals it needs a much higher flow rate than freshwater. I don't do water changes. I dose the elements needed, as I find water changes to be the single most depressing thing about keeping a saltwater aquarium

I'm not well up on salt water tanks My current freshwater tank has a combined turnover of 3000 lph which I thought was high for a 4ft tank (internal bio filter 1000 lph and external filter 2000 lph which also has pre-filter unit fitted). Water wise I'm looking into having a HMA filter fitted instead of going down RO route. And I'm also upgrading my lighting from T5 to the Interpet Trispec Led system this week which can be programed for sunset and sunrise and night setting. It looks really neat and is a direct replacement for my tank (I have Juwel Rio) but it's not cheap £180 per unit (I have 2 units) but the long term benefits of not having to change T5 tubes every six months will soon outway the initial cost of this Getting back to the Red Tailed Cat back when I kept one you could expect to pay £400 upwards for one but now you can get them on Ebay for as little as £40 which is shocking really considering the care they need.

I have LED lights and they save a lot of money compared to T5's. The sunrise/sunset features are really cool.
