A team starts from the back & after months of just watching I can safely say with hope many will agree with me that we have completely lost our shape at the back, and are lacking consistency.
This seasons performances makes me wonder: Did Darrell get it all wrong at the back end of last season?
Going in to the final push of the season, with a chance for the playoffs, Darrell decides to announce his retained list which sees many popular leaders leave the team who had contributed to the form of our life & we simply didnt replace them with their attributes, let alone the numbers we let go! The fact that several of our better performers were only on loan didnt help this, and is affecting us badly this year, especially since Sweeney, Telford & Bola are on loan and will leave once more.
It pained me that we didnt sign Lumley permanently & is paining me to this day despite signing two, I quote "able" goalkeepers simply because teams are built from the back, and Lumley was so commanding and put a firm, warm, reassuring hand on the defenders in front of him whereas this year we are having a defensive crisis because of internationals, suspensions and simply too much rotation. We need a settled back four, and goalkeeper and build from there.
Would be nice to have other opinions.

Shame on Lumley, but he is no 2 at QPR and you can't blame him for staying at the championship club.
I believe Smith could be a very good keeper at L1 and Championship level in the future. He needs a bit of time.
We had to let go the old and goldies and the replacements will take time to gel, at least half a season. Its about rebuilding again after having a settle squad for 3 years.

To reply to the title of the thread - any team that has used nine different players across the back in just fifteen matches in my opinion is going to struggle. It reeks of desperation to me - worryingly we have already lost nine games with a just a third of the season gone - last season in total we lost sixteen games and managed a mid table finish. Unfortunately the back line are being offered little or no protection through the midfield which is only compounding the problem.

This was raised in a kind of way at the SC AGM. MS commented that the players are a nice honest bunch, but too nice too each other & unwilling to have a go/rant at someone making a b****up. He said he & DC were trying to address/cure it. Having stood behind Slocombe at several away matches, I've not noticed he's very vocal, unless it's my hearing.

Slocombe looks the least of our problems defensively from what I have seen.
We need more bite in midfield and less individual mistakes

Ollie Clarke hasn't been the player he was last year. Lines has never been one to put himself about and Sercombe is similar to Lines. With Ollie off the boil are defensive capabilities in midfield are lacking
