He needs to learn when to make a tackle and when to stand off too. There was one time last night I think at 2-1 when he made what looked like a reckless challenge in the box in front of the blackthorn end that could easily been a penalty. From where I stood it looked needless and could have cost us the win. At Forest Green he made a bad one seconds after making a great challenge too which resulted in a booking and he was very close to a second yellow in a previous home game too, possible Halifax?? He is a kid still but at right back he is exposed to more wingers running at him than at centre back to needs to learn when to tackle ASAP!
I really rate Tom and think he can have a good career in the game but there are a few things he needs to learn, especially if he see's himself as a right back. What is his best position? Centre back or midfield??

Imo it would be good to loan tom out for the odd month or two, even if he cant get a game he would benefit im sure from the training offered somewhere else, as often a different set of eyes can often pick up on something that may not be quite right and focus in on it to improve him as a player, in fact i think it would be good for a few players who maybe for some reason dont get game time

I like Lockyer, he's one of our better players but I'm not sure he's comfortable at rightback. The problem is, apart from Leadbitter, we have no one would can play there and it seems like Clarke prefers Leadbitter as a wingback and not a rightback. I have heard that Turley can play rightback but that could be a waste of a very good centre back.

I feel this is a little harsh on Tom. Leadbitter has had one decent game (Lincoln) out of 10... Lockyer has been pretty solid in almost every game this year. We won. He will learn. Roll on the next game! UTG! Leadbitter has only played 4 games not 10 Carry on

Lockyear nearly cost us a victory last night with a very rash challenge at 2-1 which was an absolute stonewall penalty
I'm a great fan and think he will go on to be a great player, with right coaching on obvious weaknesses
A rest woundn't be the worst thing that's ever happened to him imo

I am told he is being watched by the same people who originally tried to buy Michael Smith, not bad for a young lad gaining experience week in week out!

Tom is only 19 and I think we are being a bit harsh on him. In most games he does 95% of things very, very well and 5% leaves me scratching my head. Yesterday in the first half I thought he was excellent bar two or three dodgy passes, second half he started by giving the ball away twice and then screwed one into the stand and I think that's all people remember.
More importantly I cannot remember an occasion when he made a serious error that led to a goal other than possibly the offside mix up with Trotman. They have clearly sorted that out. I think Leadbetter made more than that in one start.
Passing wise I think he is the best of the back four but has his odd moments. Lee Brown is on a par with with his left foot but not his right. Tom has two good feet. If he really was rubbish he would be a centre back trying to get the occasional game behind Parkes and Trotman.
The fact that he can be moved about as cover is getting him games but is now working against him as he is being judged as a right back. If Lee Brown gets injured it will probably be Tom who is left back and he will be judged there.
In reality we are lucky to have him as he is nearly always the one who swaps position mid game to change the shape. Who else could do that - Lee Brown possibly? Send him out on loan? What nonsense - even on the bench he covers the whole back 4.
Give the kid a chance because he will only get better.

I think you missed the point of when i said loan him out, fresh eyes might pick up on something like the 5% you mention, if this was sorted think how much better he would be, i think im not alone in hoping and thinking that tom has a long future at our club and will get better as we go up the leagues in the future

It's a bit like a good golfer with the shanks. He can play 3 good holes and then inexplicably hit it 45 degrees to the right. Doesn't make him a bad golfer but clearly needs to sort it out.

no but with a fresh pair of eyes and maybe an additional coaching, he could turn into a better golfer

Just to clarify as I started this thread, I think Tom is a great young player who always gives 100% and is the best young defender I have seen play for Rovers in a long time. It is just I don't think he is a right back.
For me, modern day right backs need to be quick, be able to put a good cross in, support the attack, provide natural width and an overlap for the winger in front of him. Tom is very very good at the defensive stuff. He can tackle, he can head, his positioning is very good and he seems to play without fear but a right back (I think) also needs to add offensive qualities which I am just not sure he has at the moment. After all, he did grow up as a centre back.

A little bit if criticism from some at right back (myself included) he was at his best today in what is, in my opinion, his best position. Tricky game against the big Rendell who has a decent record at this level and I thought he coped admirably. Well done Tom! As much as I like Trotman and would bring him back when fit Tom showed he is ready to fit in when needed centrally.

He struggles in the air quite a bit though and although he is very good, you can see the boy in hm at times.

A very accomplished performance against the current top scorer in the league, doesn't shirk a challenge & plays for the rest of the team. Realistically what more could you ask?
Proud to be part of a group that sponsors him!

Lockyer is a great player who is asked to play in lots of different positions. Bound to find it hard against some onthe monsters at this level but one of the only guys to come out of last season with any credit along with Mildenhall
