Unbelievably fantastic signings. leadbitter mansell lines monkhouse taylor bodin gaffney sinclair easter These are the hardcore of signings that along with the players dc shrewdly retained after the relegation that made the miracle of league 1 football come true so soon after the disaster of relegation. Its just my personal list of course others may add or subtract players of course. Since we got back into league 1 the obvious failure of tom nichols[so far] stands out though i would say its partly offset by sercombe and the lumley/sweeney loans last january.

MY assessment on scale Poor, OK, Good, Excellent and promising when they are development signings Strikes me as a mixed bag, some shockers, some Ok other good and a couple of Excellents. Puddy - Poor Slocombe - OK Smith - OK Andre - Promising Leadbitter - Good Trotman - OK J Clarke - OK/ Good Hartley - OK Harris - Poor Burn - 50k - Poor Partington - 85k - Good Broadbent - Promising Menayese - Promising Mansell - Good Gosling - OK Lines - Good Monkhouse - Good Sinclair - Good Balanta - Poor Bell-Baggie - Poor Montano - OK Bodin - Excellent Lawrence - Poor Moore - Poor Sercombe - 150 - Good Taylor - Excellent White - Poor Easter - Good Blissett - 80k - Poor Gaffney - 60k - Good Fallon - Poor Nichols - 350k - Have to wait and see but Poor at present Some incredibly harsh ratings in there. Balanta and Gosling helped get us out of the conference and Gosling played in that final game in league 2 and helped set up the winning goal. I also find it hard to not rate Sinclair Lines Mansell Monkhouse anything short of excellent for what they did in the conference season and league 2 (those that were there). If we'd signed them as league 1 players then yeah I'd agree but they were excellent signings for the double promotion.

They were brought in as cover for the rest of the squad should we have needed somebody at the end of the season when pushing for promotion

Surely what prompted the OP was the discussion on another thread was that recruitment was DCs weakest attribute.
No one (other than the 2 usual suspects) was saying anything negative about the players or their achievements for us. Obviously they all played their part in our success.
I still maintain that DCs man management, tactics, game management, motivation and squad management in terms of who to let go and when are stronger than his transfer dealings which in my opinion are on a par with most other managers.

It would be interesting to know the set up of our club is compared to others when it comes to recruiting players, it seems ours is basically DC gives a list to SH and it's look of the draw who he signs from the list. Do other Div 1 club's have chief scouts and a big scouting network backed up by a recruitment team?

That's certainly opened my eyes to DCs transfer dealings. I too had thought recruitment wasn't his strongest suit, but looking at that he's not done too badly.
I think the Nichols signing has come under lots of scrutiny because of the size of the fee involved. For the money fans were expecting someone to hit the ground running.

Whether a fan thinks a player looks good on the pitch is irrelevant . Its what that player contributes to the squad 7 days a week.
All the players that helped contribute to the conference promotion season.....were therefore good signings. All the players that contributed to the league two promotion season.....were therefore good signings. All the players that contributed to the highest league position in 17 years...were therefore good signings. The only players that have to prove themselves are the one that have joined this season....if the club finishes 11th or above then they were good signings.

Yeah I agree, itโs all about the squad and if the squad is successful then the players in it have done well. Bodin and Taylor aside we could say that none of them have been incredible signings but we have done incredibly well these last 3 years with all of those players, not just Taylor and Bodin.
