We didn't let him go, his contract ran out in the summer of 2016. Then he signed a brand new deal later that window (presumably coz it was the best deal he could get at that time). That's how I remember it too. He ran his contract down thinking he was Billy big time and the only other club interested was Oxford. So I guess we out bid Oxford for our own player! As it turned out though, we got a few goals and a few quid out of him. Would have got nothing if he went to Oxford. It's only because of where he went and the reason they purchased him that we have a bitter taste over the deal.Don't forget the timing of the transfer as well

I’ve never heard that before. We let Taylor go on a free then offered him a deal!? We didn't let him go, his contract ran out in the summer of 2016. Then he signed a brand new deal later that window (presumably coz it was the best deal he could get at that time). And probably got a nice signing on fee as well.

It seems to me that BB was seeing how things went this season at Rovers. Hence turning down 4 contract offers. Once it was apparent that there would be no playoff push he accepted that moving on would be in his best interest.
The sad thing is if the Snake had stayed last season then there was a fair chance that the playoffs would have been reached .Even if that didn't lead to anything .I think this season would have been a promotion push what with the improvement again in Bodins play.
Possible lessons to learn:
If you have a star forward player (Bodin) maybe it is better to invest a big fee into a star defender rather than on another striker (Nichols). When you already have two average league one strikers at the club (Harrison/Gaffney) perhaps the signing of a non league prospect from way down and hoping you can develop them is a better option in the given situation (?) Would signing a centreback for £350,000 (for example) have given the team a strong base to let the stars make the difference.?
As it stands there is no star player at Rovers so its now about finding one !

Bodin mentioned in his Preston interview that he was aware of interest in the summer but the club didn't accept any bids, so I fancy he would have gone then if given the opportunity. Simply a footballer who wants to play at the highest level, like most of them. Secondly if we hadn't attempted to replace Taylor there would have been uproar. Sweeney was the centre-half to get in the summer and we did it, all this stuff is complete hindsight. Nobody else on here wanted to get anybody but Sweeney in the summer.

Sadly we don't have the benefit of hindsight - signing Sweeney was the key signing at the time - would we have spent another "£350k" on a "centre back" after signing him?

If we had signed Plymouths other CB instead of Hartley we wouldnt have had to look for anyone else, plus we'd have massive resale value

At least Taylor signed another contract to insure a future transfer fee, even if a lowish release cause was inserted. He could quite easily have done what Bodin did and refuse to sign but done the decent thing, whoever he joined. Bodin forgot who got his career back on track which enabled him to pursue his dreams. It wouldn’t have done him any harm to do the same as Taylor but like people say, loyalty and gratitude is a thing of the past. That's not what happened. Taylor did refuse to sign and let his contract expire so could go on a free. Then he signed a new contract on a free (which happened to be with us, presumably coz we offered the best deal). Aye, and probably a tasty 'signing-on' fee as well.

Sadly we don't have the benefit of hindsight - signing Sweeney was the key signing at the time - would we have spent another "£350k" on a "centre back" after signing him? Signing a defender on loan for a season is not a solution or long term planning ,it is a stop gap. I don't believe that given the option of the club signing an experienced centreback of quality (think Tilson) would have been shouted down in favour of loaning a player for a season. Signing Sweeney was a good loan signing based on the fact the club only had one other fit experienced centreback at the time and Sweeney is a good player.
Would fans have preferred Sweeney on a season loan and an average scoring striker from a midtable team (Nichols) OR A Tilson or Elliot on a three year deal ? and a gamble on a non league attacking player ( Ellington/Hayles/Penrice/Purnell as examples of some that came good). Knowing you already had Harrison/Gaffney and Bodin on the books.
Hindsight is where you hopefully learn lessons and shape a better future.
It will be interesting to see what players do come in this January.

Sweeney's value in the summer was probably exceeding £350 given Stoke paid £250K for him the season before, so we got that decent £350K C/H for a year for free, transfer fee wise. We could have paid £350K and still got somebody off form like Sweeney. If Sweeney & Nichols had been as good as we, and no doubt DC, had hoped they would be we could well be pushing for at least a top 6 space whilst hoping we didn't get any bids for Nichols. The real issue is why Nichols isn't justifying his transfer fee, PNE got BB for not a lot more!!!

The real issue is why Nichols isn't justifying his transfer fee, PNE got BB for not a lot more!!! Stoke City paid the money for the potential and therefore in the future having a multimillion pound player bought for peanuts. £350,000 would buy a very experienced league one defender or a player dropping down from divisions above. Its experience and composure that the defence needs/needed not potential. Rovers already have potential in the form of Lockyer,Broadbent and Menayese.
Think of the 1999/2000 team that finished 7th in league one.
Andy Thomson came from championship Portsmouth. Andy Tilson came from Prem QPR Steve Foster came from non league Woking Tom White came through the youth set up Mike Trought came through the youth set up Rob Trees came from Manchester United youth set up Stephane Leoni came from Metz (b team) Trevor Challis came from Prem QPR. Robbie Pethick came from Championship Portsmouth. Marcus Andeasson came from Kalmar in Sweden. Dave Pritchard came from Telford
So a mix of former premier league ,championship , non league ,overseas and youth players. The current defenders are all either through the youth set up or from non league or young inexperienced loanees. As D.C said before the non league squad has played beyond its level and done well. There is a limit though ,D.C. recognises that higher level players are needed now to stabalise and move the squad forward. That first step may just be league two and league one defenders coming in to boost the backline.
