Is this happening again or has Tom Gorringe sorted out a major sponsorship deal?
Personally, if we got a decent amount for the home (or home and away shirt sponsorship), I would still offer the 1883 Sponsorship deal, maybe at a reduced price, whereby the 1883 club sponsors still had a chance to win other prizes, such as training kit sponsors, stand name, advertising hoardings, or maybe clubhouse bar naming rights?, or development team shirt sponsors etc.
This would reward the sponsors who contributed in the conference days and bring in a decent amount of money before the seasons end.

The 1883 Club is being revamped for next year. I have met with Tom (along with all 1883 members) to discuss the changes. The one thing was that the front shirt sponsorship would go to one company and not be raffled in the 1883 draw. I got the impression that the draw would still take place but with different prizes. I was told the main sponsor was due to be finalised before the end of the month. This is the difference that bringing someone like Tom to the club, someone with experience in commercial deals (he was behind the deal that is the reason why Brighton's AMEX is called AMEX) and can also get stuff done.
He also talked about other things that are aiming to be completed over the summer, including electronic turnstiles.

A bit worrying he was organising sponsorship for Brighton's new stadium whilst still employed by Pompey? As far as electronic turnstiles at the Mem, did he manage to say that with a straight face?

Yes, he also wants to create a 'business club' as part of the 1883 with a monthly meet up. Having the chance to be on the front of the shirt was the reason why I was involved this season. Next season, I'm not so sure.....

Electronic ticketing means that they can confront someone and request evidence that they have paid.

They should really get on board with this electronic advertising round the pitch. Most clubs have this now and businesses spend a fortune to have a minutes advertising during a game. It will really be a good investment. Advertising boards are not that unique and bigger businesses such as Heineken etc prefer to have the whole pitch for a few minutes with their branding.

I didn’t do the 1883 club instead favouring direct sponsorship which, for the return, is not great value for money, but it’s done to support my local club that I support so no grumbles on that front.
I did toy with the idea of the 1883 this year with the lucrative prizes being the shirt sponsorship and ground sponsorship. I didn’t do and kind of regretted it. I’m not sure what they could offer in return for the same cost of entry? Depending on what’s on offer depends on whether I would give it another think.
The whole reason why the 1883 club was set up was because it raised more money than selling the shirt sponsorship itself. L1 teams get in the region of £50k for shirt sponsorship. The 1883 club raises more than that and is also big appeal for local businesses.
Isn’t there already an independent business club that is run by as gas head that has a monthly meet at the Mem?

It will really be a good investment. Advertising boards are not that unique and bigger businesses such as Heineken etc prefer to have the whole pitch for a few minutes with their branding. They are usually supplied by the paying commercial rights holders and installed for live games, particularly the FA cup. Any usual pitchside sponsors then get overridden for this. Bang out of order in my view. The businesses who stump up the money to support the club should be allowed the added incentive of a bit of tv advertising should the club land a big cup tie. As a premier league club, with the amount of tv coverage you would be daft not to have them. I know City gave them at the gate and the cost for 5 mins sponsorship across 90 mins is eye watering. You don’t get all the football and rugby games either. That extra! I know, I had the cold call from Bristol Sport!

They will be portable.

The 1883 club raises more than that and is also big appeal for local businesses. I urged him not to do anything that damaged the connection between Bristol Rovers FC and local, smaller businesses. Getting 100+ businesses to stump up £1k+ is a massive feat and can't be taken for granted. The fact that Tom emailed me personally, back in December, to arrange the meeting, the FIRST time (after doing 1883 for 4 years) that anyone from the club had emailed me not asking for money is a real indication of his intent. The free ticket stuff is worrying but you can see how. The club had to clarify season ticket policy at the beginning of the season because people take the water. With the cards, he also mentioned it allows them to open up things like 'Rovers cash', so the card can act like a contactless card or VISA card which can be used in and around the ground, the same card that has your season ticket on. I know I would buy more food if I just had to bring one card and not remember to bring cash (different now the stands allow cards but I think it would still encourage more to spend more, therefore helping the club).

I’m speaking from ignorance here as I do t know whether turnstile operatives are volunteers or paid. Some of them look like volunteers?

Yes, that was discussed when I was with him. It opens the possibility of ordering and paying for your half time beer while the first half is going on. All you'll need to do is collect it. Bonza! He wants to allow everyone who wants a half time drink to get it and have 15 mins to drink it.

I've used electronic turnstiles many times when watching football in Cyprus.
They are a good idea, especially for season tickets where a credit card size plastic card with a barcode provided quicker entry into the ground than fumbling through a book of paper tickets. However to avoid queues building up for those who pay on the day, you need separate cash and credit card sales points. Run properly it will work better than the current system (despite having to queue twice), but if you try to introduce it without changing the current entrances it will not work. It is much more secure system, and less susceptible to petty pilfering or 'unofficial' entry.

Yes, electronic turnstiles have worked well at Bournemouth. About 11,000 using them on match day so not too different from us. They used them at a couple of friendlies pre season and it was pretty chaotic but it soon settled down. But it does mean there’s no pay at the gate on the day so a big change in habit for some and staff would be needed to sell the tickets earlier on the day before going to the turnstile. Good to hear that the new guy seems on the ball and working hard to make it better, UTG!
