The Hillsborough tragedy changed football in this country over night. I know it wasn’t Down to hooligans it was down to bad policing and organising but the way the police worked at football was completely revamped and with the cages gone too it all became safer. A lot of people died that day and in a way the atmosphere at matches died a little bit too. I think a lot of people who were up for a scrap at football re thought what it was actually all about and things calmed down quite a bit very quickly. I must admit I used to love the hostile atmosphere as a young kid in the 80s though even though it was frightening at times as a 7 - 8 year old kid , seeing blokes getting their heads kicked in. I’m glad it has changed though, I’ve got a four year old daughter who I’ve taken to a couple of games and she loves it. She wouldn’t have loved the 80s The 80's were nothing compared to the 70's.

Both the 70 s and the 80s were a good/ bad time to be a football fan it seemed the norm in the day but when I look back what twats we all were re hills borough I wasn't there thank goodness but not all the blame lies with the police

1975 away to Portsmouth. Me and my mate caught an early train as we didn't want any aggro. I think we were the only Rover fans to get off the train. Met by 50 coppers with dogs. Up against the wall for a search. I wore glasses and in my pocket was my cloth covered, metal spectacle case. One of the coppers pulled it out and decided it was a weapon. Buggers confiscated it. In the history of the world, has a spectacle case ever been used as a weapon?

Cant say ive been in too many police escorts as i often found you either got no beer or you ended up stuck in the ground at 2pm. Did end up in the millwall escort before the home game 85/86, but me and mate just walked off without coppers saying anything, different story afterwards as ended up on stapleton road platform and a nice friendly plod shoved me and my mate onto the millwall train, we went all the way back to paddington, bought some cider and chips and got the train back, interesting day out to say the least.

Easter Monday bank holiday 1982 away at the lot down the road. After the match the Rovers fans in one go were escorted out the ground. The Police then broke the mass into smaller groups in other directions until they just dispersed. Missed my train back to London from TM so headed to Filton to get a train from Wales. In the town centre I was stopped and searched by the police and they held up my scarves for all and sundry to see. A group of 6-7 lads were watching this from a bus stop. Needless to say once the police left I was surrounded by this group of sh1theads and had the proverbial kicked out of me.

What about Swindle on a Sunday late 90s? Before mobs had been used. Before texting etc..
On a Sunday, choo choo.... Around 100 of us get to town centre early doors, no old bill. All pile in pub, usual faces usual clobber.
Walking through un escorted town centre, stopping traffic, proper mobbed up. Hit pub, we're let in and then confined........much nearer the time, we're all escorted to the ground.
Haha! Bless them, the inbreds make a small remonstration near the ground, but always behind o b.
After match, we are escorted (poorly) back to station which was fun as a few of us at front with NM started running! This caused havoc with o b whom were plunged in temporary chaos trying to keep us all line! Haha!
First time I really realised Swindle are gutless Fools.
