Can anyone recall the old Police Escorts from the 80's, a few spring to mind;
Bristol City away, probably about 86 or 87 when you would get an escort back into Bristol by the Bus station and they would then just leave you whilst City fans had followed us all the way back.
Wolves away on a Bank Holiday Monday Monday when we won 1-0...Very eventful walk before and after the game whilst holding an inflatable parrot!!
Fulham Away late 80's - Metropolitan Police stormed into a Pub we were all drinking in and started pushing us out of the pub and then marched us all the way to the ground
Not sure if escorts are the same anymore at some of the bigger games.

Swansea at the Vetchfield in 1979, it was the fa cup. Walking down the road to ground with about 500 rovers fans, it was a straight road but very long and at every side street there was an ambush from the Jacks! Plus bricks & bottles thrown at us what a charming bunch they were, they were in the 1st division and had Bob Latchford upfront. We got battered for most of the game but won 1 - 0 and then we had to endure the same gauntlet on the way back with even more pi$$ed off sheep enterers. That was a fun night I can tell you! UTG.

Does calling an escort and getting her to dress up in police uniform count?

I recall Plymouth away when we won to get in the playoffs and i think we relegated them (96?)was a bit hairy. I was quite young but remember a few rocks flying about as we were escorted into the stadium..

Ha ha ! I have memories of escorts but from the other perspective. As a teenager going to Eastville I often started going to games on my own. After games I had to wait for my bus to take me to the centre on Stapleton Road. Unfortunately for me, this was the route away fans would be escorted back to the train station. If my bus didn't come early I had to put up with scary abuse from away fans going back and praying the old bill would stop any aggro. Never forget Cardiff fans wearing miner's helmets and donkey jackets ! This would be late 70s.

Does calling an escort and getting her to dress up in police uniform count? Yes, that’s fine by me. I prefer French maids myself.

Swindon, maybe 6 years ago (?), Coralled at the County Ground then marched all through the town to the train station, folks were taking photos and videos of us as we passed by. One guy was made to walk right past his car even though he activated his remote central locking in front of a police woman, she still wouldn't let him out, made him walk a mile to the train station so he had to walk a mile back!

Not 80s but remember a fun police escort back to the station from Cardiff's ground after a 1-0 win in about 95 (Browning from memory). Marched past all the Cardiff pubs with a police escort with a few interesting moments - then coralled in some crappy tunnel under the station for ages. Surges going on everywhere, got a bit scary at one point. Eventually let us out and onto a platform and we all went home happy after the win at the end of the day. Very ordinary policing though.

Swindon away was always a good one, police waiting for you at the station. All bundled together in a pub reluctant to take any of us. Then all walked past the county ground hotel pub and all of them waiting for us.

I remember Hereford away - think was the first time we played them - we got stuffed on the pitch 3-0 ? But frogmarched to and from the game. Oh and the train had everyone's frustration taken out on it and was a wreck by the time it arrived back in Bristol

The best escort ever for me was Swansea away in April 1980.
As we piled out of the train into the station the singing from the Rovers fans was immense. Must have been heard all over town and we soon started attracting attention from the locals. There was a bit of ‘bantering and threatening’ going on as we were marched past their pubs and through the streets but then the funniest thing happened as three Swansea fans appeared across the road looking like they wanted to fight all of us. That was funny enough but the Old Bill got involved and tried to nick them. Two of them were quickly apprehended but the third was giving a copper the run around a parked car. It was like something from Laurel and Hardy going this way then that until the Swansea fan tried to give him the slip and ran out into the road and promptly got knocked down by a passing car. The whole escort were falling over laughing as he was marched off battered and bruised from his exploits.
Then when we got to the ground and were waiting to go through the turnstiles the Police were searching everyone and just as we got up close there was this tinkling sound of metal hitting the ground in front of us and then some donut saying to the obvious source of the sound ‘here mate you’ve dropped your knife’ in full earshot of the coppers doing the searching.
We then went on to lose 2-0 with a typically inept away performance and we all trudged back to the station in a lot lower spirits than coming in. Then to cap it as the train trundled through Cardiff we got bricked by their fans and one of the missiles came crashing through the window next to us
They don’t make away days like that anymore!

Wolves away the year after we got promoted with Gerry Francis' army, so prob 1990. My first trip to Molineux. Coaches parked up in some trading estate and we were escorted to the ground by the police. Drew the game 1-1 after being behind. I remember feeling the atmosphere to be quite intimidating. After the game there wasn't a copper to be seen and we had to make our own way back to the coaches, which wasn't pleasant. My memory of this next bit isn't clear but I think one of the coaches had their windows smashed.

I remember this one. Many watered off fans were trying to be allowed to just go go to their cars to no avail and had to keep going to the station. Ironically I think it’s the only game @hugotheelder and I have ever caught a train to so by chance caused us no problem! I think we took the lead in the first minute of that game and the swindle fans were ripping up seats. More than 6yrs ago though I’m sure!

I was one of the people made to walk to the station despite telling several coppers our car was the opposite direction. When they finally let us go to walk probably 3 times the distance we needed to back to the car they told us to hide our colours.

The Hillsborough tragedy changed football in this country over night. I know it wasn’t Down to hooligans it was down to bad policing and organising but the way the police worked at football was completely revamped and with the cages gone too it all became safer. A lot of people died that day and in a way the atmosphere at matches died a little bit too. I think a lot of people who were up for a scrap at football re thought what it was actually all about and things calmed down quite a bit very quickly. I must admit I used to love the hostile atmosphere as a young kid in the 80s though even though it was frightening at times as a 7 - 8 year old kid , seeing blokes getting their heads kicked in. I’m glad it has changed though, I’ve got a four year old daughter who I’ve taken to a couple of games and she loves it. She wouldn’t have loved the 80s
