I'm a season ticket holder and have seen the atmosphere and songs, in general, drop over the last ten years at home.. Back in the day we had a song for almost every player, now we have a ginger song for Gaffney, one of our own for Lines, after that I'm struggling.
Just a random thought but before every home game at Anfield, YNWA gets played on the speaker and the whole stadium stands and sings. Hairs on your neck stuff. Imagine that at the mem just before kick off we had irene played and everyone got involved around the ground. Clearly it's not anfield but would be a good way to get the crowd going and players inspired just before kick off (especially looking at our slow starts this year). Nowadays we may get Irene after we score, or the opposition score but mainly in a pocket of fans. Even the old come on you blues (x2) before a corner has disappeared!

It is so much better, it gives me goosebumps and I don't even support Liverpool. The ultimate football song for me.

Unfortunately it seems some fans just aren't interested in singing or supporting in a vocal way these days.
Where I sit in the ground me and a few around me join in with the singing and aren't afraid to make our voices heard but we seem to be in the minority tbh. Most of the fans around me hardly make a peep all game. I don't think it's a lack of songs as such but maybe a lack of confidence on their part or the fact that they don't really enjoy that sort of thing.
You can see the difference when you go to away games, the atmosphere is so much more intense and lively. I wish we could recreate that level of intensity at home throughout the whole of the ground but I'm not sure it's going to be that easy.
That said I'm always up for singing along so if anyone comes up with some new songs / chants you can count on me to join in!

It seems to me that our singers are only interested in a new song if they have heard it from some other Club's singers in the first place.

You'll Never Walk Alone was not originally a "Football Song". It comes from a 1945 Broadway musical called "Carousel", written by Rodgers and Hammerstein. The song has been covered by numerous singers and groups since then - but the best known cover was made by Gerry and the Pacemakers in 1964, I think???. Gerry and the Pacemakers represented the Liverpool connection and their version was very quickly adopted by Liverpool FC and taken as their own. The rest is history.
We have adopted "Goodnight Irene" as our own, in exactly the same way and it has become our anthem in exactly the same way.
I see no reason why it shouldn't be used as our crowd rouser at the beginning of each game. I am not sure that all the verses are appropriate - but you could repeat the chorus a few times. It is, after all, the chorus which is the anthem rather than the verses. If we did use this as our crowd rouser, I would prefer a different and slightly slower version than the sh** cover that is played just after Sweet Caroline on matchdays.
For the more imaginative amongst you, you could make up your own lyrics for new verses - one verse for each of our favourite players or even to slag off our red shirted neighbours - there is a challenge for you all!!!
Sometimes I live in the country, Sometimes I live in the town, but every time I see a shithead' I wish the bugger would drown.........
Irene goodnight......... etc

GI could be miles better though if we played a version that wasn't played at 100mph. The problem for me is that we get fed the same crap music every single game that unless it's a local derby or a big match towards the end of the season it's quite hard to get excited. Also you hear other clubs are now adopting tunes that are heard in European football but I can't remember the last time we started a decent new song.

Agree with the op....twerton days were a lot more hostile in my opinion and the singing came thick and fast...we must have had a song for half the team at least and a lot more West Country shout outs in the songs... I don’t have a problem with nicking songs off other clubs and putting our version on it as it’s nice to hear new stuff...
Ah we’re the gas ah we’re gas etc should be sang a lot more than come on you blues..
I do think the fact our record of conceding goals at home( we bottom of the league in this stat) doesn’t help even with our home record which is wobbling a little, You can tell there’s more tension now each game... I also think the lack of singing is down to swapping and changing formations etc... But we do need to have new songs and bring in some old West Country classics and like previous posts mentions stop sweet Caroline being played and better slower good night Irene version loud and proud....

As a season ticket holder I’d love there to more songs to get involved with.
Some new chants occasionally get posted on here and most are often shot down, some quite fairly to be honest, but others not so much. Sometimes the simplist songs are the best......
One for Tom Broadbent;
“He’s bigger than you, He’s bigger than you, Tommy Broadbent, He’s bigger than you!”
Some of these lower league front men are big lads, Charltons number 27 from the weekend for example as soon as Broadbent came on you could see that he was even bigger.
Imagine Broadbent puts in a crunching tackle and the crowd sings this song, he would love it I’m sure! The word bigger could easily be substituted for ‘stronger’.
One for Stu Sinclair;
“He’s here, he’s there, he’s f**king everywhere, Stu Sinclair, Stu Sinclair!”
Songs I’d definitely sing, probably on my own though!! ’

Singing balls to your partner. Ass against the wall. If you don't get Fuxk on a Saturday night. You'll never get Fuxk at all.

Drink up thee zyder (briefly) Gerry Francis' barmy army Gerry, give us a wave.... I'm sure there were more.

Crowds are getting quieter all over the country imo. Not enough young people at games. Older people dont make much noise. I watch a young shirehampton fc play when i can,they are so bloody noisy compared to shirehampton golf club where my dads plays. They also hardly watch whatever game is on sky at 5.30 pm,they are not interested. footballs in trouble but it dosnt know it yet imo.

Clubs need to do everything possible to attract young fans as the average age of our fanbase continues to rise. 90% + of fans at other clubs say the same thing 'atmosphere aint what it use to be'

Everything about that song is better is better, the words the singing and the tune. Goodnight Irene is too dreary for a football song to be honest. I like it and will always sing it, because of the association with us, but I wouldn't like the song otherwise to be fair.

I was surprised when we played Daggers at home that the crowd before the game sung songs for pretty much the whole team:
Mildenhall = Milllldeennnhaaallllll
Leadbitter = Ohhhhh Danny Danny! Danny Danny Danny Danny Leadbitter Lockyer = He's here, he's there, he's every f*cking where.... Parkes = Can't remember tbh Brown = Can't remember tbh
Mansell = Lee Lee Lee Mansell Bodin = Bodin on fire? Sinclair = Stuart Sinclair, Stuart Sinclair - a short angry b*stard who's covered in hair Lines = One of our own
Gaffney = Oh Rory Gaffney etc Harrison = Nananananananana it Ellis Harrison, Harrison Taylor = C*ck in the cup
That's off the top of my head. I think, link people have said though that stadiums are getting generally quieter nowadays

The Jim Reeves version of GI is about the best and right tempo. I Posted 2 possible new songs 7th march "you'll never get rid of the Gas" and "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac. Prior to that "Darrell, you're so F-cking cool" and many others over the years.
