Surprised Moore hasn't got another year, but then if you look overall at his two years here he hasn't done enough for a new deal.

7 lost, possibly 8 if leadbitter doesn't sign.
Are we going to sign 7/8 players to replace them?
Ontop of that we surely still need another striker as an addition.
Interesting to see what happens, strange to publish a retained list with a game left to play even if it is irrelevant, isn't it?

Sensible stuff. Decent core squad (give or take two or three):
Kyle Bennett, Tom Broadbent, James Clarke, Ollie Clarke, Tony Craig, Rory Gaffney, Ellis Harrison, Chris Lines, Tom Lockyer, Rollin Menayese, Bernard Mensah, Tom Nichols, Joe Partington, Liam Sercombe, Stuart Sinclair, Sam Slocombe, Adam Smith.

Not surprised at the news about Byron Moore. Despite his upturn in form over the last 5 or so games, that simply doesn't cover up for his poor performances and lack of effort before hand.
Broom, sad to see one of our own go, but never looked capable. Will end up somewhere like Mangotsfield.
Burn, less said the better.
Leads, hope he signs the new deal, but also hope we go out and sign a first choice right back this summer (edit: forgot about Partington. With Partington, J.Clarke and if needed Sinclair we have enough in this position already so I would spend budget elsewhere).
Marc Bola, personally wouldn't have him back. Would be okay to sign as a cover left back but again wouldn't have him as first choice.
Dominic Telford, hope Stoke release him so we can sign him (also hope they don't offer a new deal or assume we would have to pay some compensation).
Ryan Sweeney, shame he couldn't regain his form from last season. Hopefully we can get another loan deal for him, if not then use Mayo as the 4th CB next season and don't loan him out.

Thank goodness we've finally been put out of Byron Moore's misery.

Thought he might give him a good run on Saturday. That said, I still think there will be some more departures before pre season...

Highlighted are the ones I think we could improve upon. Maybe a bit harsh on Mensah but Darrell clearly doesn't fancy him as he can't even get a sub appearance ahead of Mo Baghdadi. Craig isn't my cup of tea but can only image him being around one more season, before going into a coaching role.

I actually thought that Byron was worth hanging on to. Even just as a squad player I think he offered something and he finally seemed to find some confidence towards the end of the season. I hope he finds himself a league club.
If our loan players have returned to their clubs we could have a fairly youthful looming side on Saturday.

Everything seems to be as expected there, pretty much everyone thought we would see the back of burn, I’m a bit surprised at the decision to retain gaffney but release Moore but I suppose DC is trying to release wages to bring in another winger so it’s understandable that DC would want him to find a new club. He just hasn’t showed that consistency because he can be a good player on his day.
Feel sorry for Broom, always worked hard and showed glimpses of talent in pre season, never really got a chance hopefully he finds a club that he can push on with

So based on the retained list -
Keepers - fine, happy to have our own 2 keepers who are decent enough and not loans like the 400 years previous.
Defenders - 4 CBs, probably need 1 more to cover Locks international duties Left back - depending on Kelly's role will need a first teamer or a strong backup - unless JC is used as a CB again instead of a RB Right back - should be fine with Parts and J Clarke, leads on bench
Midfielders - winger is a must, a similar player to Bennett would be ideal
Forwards - an additional striker is also a must, would like to see Telford back permanently, and another, nichols out on loan - desperately needs to hit the net a few times.
In summary, a LB, a CB/RB (depending on JCs role) a winger, and 1/2 forwards.
Then there's just the strengthening of the squad.
Will be a busy hour at 4pm on August 9th 😂

Why on Earth has Gaffney been retained? Can only hope he will just be a squad player.

We'll be struggling to field a team for Southend at this rate!
