indeed. squads are going to need 'reliable' squad players He's only "reliable" if he can stay fit. Him and Partington to me are very similar players - IMO neither are a long term solution to the right full back position - 'utility' players that can cover most defensive positions in the short term only. A steady signing nonetheless who will do a job when required. In some respects I'm surprised he has decided to stay - I feel his game time will be limited. Is he intended to be a long term right back solution?
Any player needs to be fit. apart from a freak allergy thing, It was only this past season JC has been injured isn't it?
Yes we need to improve on the players in the squad, that's what additions are for, but you need to keep some players around that can slot in and won't kick up a fuss about not being picked every week.

Hear many times that James Clarke is “reliable”, “steady”, “dependable”, “does a job”, “can be called upon”, “versatile” etc, etc.....
...if he’s all of those things, why don’t people want him starting ahead of presumably an unknown signing in the summer

A great signing - cos he started the last match !
Seriously, he's strong, but pretty slow and doesn't create much going forward. Just a reliable squad addition I hope.

I think when James Clarke is punching above his weight that's when he's at his best. Solid, reliable and a decent squad member over a season.

That would mean we have 5 right backs at the club including the development squad lad which would be a massive waste of money.

Personally happy that he's signed, think he's at his best as a right sided centre back in a 3 but solid & reliable anywhere across the back 4. DC obviously trusts him hence the reason he was back in the squad as soon as he was fit.

Good news.
I like Clarke. Underated player. Happy if he starts.
Also, utility wise: gives us another attacking option on the bench as he can play across the back.

Absolutely spot on....if we had signed a right back from the championship that no one had heard of let alone seen play....then you would have people on her estatic...instead we have signed a very capable player who has a fantastic attitude.....and people moan.

I agree , quite surprised by the negative comments to be honest , but hey ho , each to their own.

Think there will be some games where he can play his part but not convinced he is good enough to take us forward. Falls in a similar category to Gaffney for me.

All good squads need a couple of utility players.
An attacking one and a defensive one.
We have Clarke and Sercombe.
I'm happy he is staying.

As has been said on here a steady dependable player. However without doubt we need better to push on in this league and the likes of the two Clarkes, Gaffney, Sinclair and Nichols have not convinced me they are the type of players to achieve that.

Realistically though, we aren’t going to have a squad full of Ellis/Sercombe/Bennett-standard players from 1-25. I’m sure DC would be thrilled to have 11-15 players of that quality, with the rest made up of James Clarke ‘filler’ types. And we know how important it is to DC that he gets the right characters into the club - JC is probably a perfect ‘DC man’.

If he is on fairly low wages then not the end of the world. Just eager for us to push on.

The greatest strength of J Clarke is his versatility. It means we can free up the sub bench at matches. 1 sub that can fulfill multiple roles. Means we can fill up the bench with other positions where we might not have players that can fill multiple roles.
