I do not think Southgate will pick anyone who he hasn't already picked in any of his previous squads. so that rules out the likes of Sancho, Sessegnon, Shelvey etc Still two friendlies to go which is why i am a bit surprised by the timing of the squad announcement. Would have been better to keep them on their toes for a bit whilst trying the odd player out, this wouldn't upset the harmony too much whilst giving one or two of the outsiders mentioned here a last minute chance. Anyway what do i know?

The biggest decision seems to be whether Hart goes or not.

Anyway what do i know? His reasoning was for the exact opposite reason; he doesn't want the players on their feet playing guessing games - he wants them to know they're in and have that little bit longer to prepare mentally. Seemed odd on the face of it but, having heard him explain it, I think it's actually a good shout tbh.

Can I ask why John Stones is in everyone's team? He's barely played for Man City since January.

If Joe Hart makes the squad then Will Puddy would have every right to consider himself unlucky.

If Pickford for example got sent off and you need to make a sub, do you just jump straight to Butland or consider Hart sat on the bench as opposed to Butland or Pope

Andy Carroll at 33/1? That might make a decent bet, I reckon Southgate will pick a target man as a plan B, as we will need that height and physicality at some point, so it would be between him and Crouch. Personally I would pick as my 23 man squad: Goalkeepers - Nick Pope, Joe Hart, Jordan Pickford Defenders - Kieran Trippier, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Kyle Walker, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Gary Cahill, Ashley Young, Ryan Bertrand, Fabian Delph Midfielders - Eric Dier, Jordan Henderson, Lewis Cook, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Dele Alli, Jesse Lingard Forwards - Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Andy Carroll, Marcus Rashford, Jamie Vardy Blimey, when you look at that you realise how bare the cupboard is when it comes to world-class players. I agree with you axegas my squad would be similar but it’s only when you start to write it down that you see the lack of class Southgate has to work with. Let’s hope he can conjure up the players to play a suitable system for them to give us half a chance. Hopefully this World Cup will turn 3/4 of them into world players. UTG!

With the inexperience you can see the need for hart to be in the squad but how harsh will it be on pope to be left out after the season he’s had.

I agree, it’s not the most illustrious squad we have ever had but what it is a youthful squad with a lot of players just starting to become stars at club level. If the likes of Rashford, Lingard, Alexander-Arnold and Stones can have a successful World Cup, in the next World Cup our squad could be held in much higher regard. The so called “golden generation” of English players were often talked up for their achievements with their clubs but they never delivered anything better than a quarter final. I’m not saying that the current squad will get any further but they seem to be under less pressure and that is surely a good thing. Even the press have all but given up on our chances of winning it. For me as long as we get as far as the knockouts and don’t embarrass ourselves then that will constitute a good World Cup. Southgate will be under immense pressure though as the England manager often is during the World Cup, the press already doubt his managerial credentials as it is, if he gets team selection or tactics wrong he will be annihilated by them.

We're miles off at the moment. Our future looks much brighter though.

He couldn't even handle Bristol City let alone the worlds elite. Maybe he has more time for football now Peaky Blinders has finished?

It’s negative experience, though. Experience of not only making personal mistakes but of the general anxiety which veiled our squads of the last couple of tournaments. Better not to learn from this and if he’s not going to play then I wouldn’t want him anywhere near the squad.

It's a difficult one with Hart/Pope. I think we've made a bit of a pigs ear of the goalkeeping jersey for England. Hart has been a regular in the England team and we haven't given enough chances to others. For example, England away to Malta in September, we played Hart. Why? What was the point? What were we going to learn from that?
We're left with a situation where we have 2 inexperienced goalkeepers at international level fighting it out for the number 1 jersey, with the most experienced keeper now being a maybe to even make the squad.
I'm on the fence with taking Hart, he is experienced and we have a lack of experience and leadership in the squad in general. However, is he going to remain positive in the squad when he is unlikely to play any part?

3 5 2 for me ----------------------- Pickford ----------------------- Alex-Arnold - Walker - Maguire - Tarkowski - Delph (or Rose) ------------- Alli - Henderson - Lingard ------------- ------------------- Sterling - Kane ------------------- So glad Hart is left out far too many blunders for England, just praying Cahill and Livermore are nowhere near the squad now. Gutted the Ox is injured.

Strong rumours is that Hart hasn't made the squad btw.
