I know there is plenty of time to make signings but the only thing I ask is that we get it done and dusted with the majority of signings completed before the players return to training. It is my opinion that our poor first half of the season is mainly down to poor preparation in the close season. Yes DC generally gets it right in the end but I am sure that if new players had the time to bed in (Pre season friendlies) then we would have a better chance of a good start. Last season was particularly bad with friendlies played with pretty weak teams and this season IMO it is even more important with as many as seven players likely to come in. Personally I like the ideal of signings not being able to be made after the first match until January as it means Managers have to get their teams in place earliar.
At the present time we have now lost two of our strikers from last season (Telford and Gaffney) and with the non scoring Nicholls and Ellis the only two left it would seem that we need two possibly three strikers and they are the players that everyone wants and can really define the season. So far Upson seems a good quality signing but Williams is very much an untried player at this level similar to Mensah so the seven which DC was hoping to sign will now be 8 due to Gaffney going.
It is a lot of work to make that number of signings and to get the majority right and whilst several teams have made rapid signings we all know that this can backfire spectacularly as Bury last season but it can also backfire the opposite way where signings are made too slowly leaving new players no time to settle in.
The next couple of weeks could well define how our season goes and whilst our midfield seems OK now we lack wingers and strikers and a left back or two would not go amiss. Personally I would like to see another keeper come in to challenge Slocombe and a dominant centre half to challenge in that area but I hope that we will now see some experienced League players as you can only afford to make one or two non league signings as it is a big gap between National and League 1.
Of course what we get in is NOT down to DC alone as the quality will depend very much on the budget he is given. We can only hope that it is reasonable but also better spent than the Nichols signing last year. for me we need a couple of physically strong strikers as we are too light weight in that area and a bit of pace in our wingers would not go amiss.
Looking forward with anticipation to the next few weeks.

Bloody hell, football chat!!
I agree, we need at least 2 strikers and would like to see them bed in early and get scoring in some "easy" preseason fixtures.

I agree with you regarding early signings. Last season, DC seemed calm about new signings, quoting that the window was still open. I know it has changed for this season, but last season 10% of the season was over by the time the window closed. That's quite a chunk of the season in realty. Best to get everyone in as early as possible. Of course, it all depends on what budgets are available. If you have money to spend, you can get the players early. If not, you have to wait and pick up the crumbs.

Two LBs, a winger on each side and two strikers if we want to challenge.

I agree, Sercombe settled in very nicely after being signed early, though you have to say that is partly down to his talent.
Are we going to sign the 2 we are linked with?

I can't imagine anyone would disagree it would be preferred to have all our business done early - DC would be in total agreement and I don't think it is a deliberate strategy to leave things late. I think the only way you can guarantee to get your first choice targets early is to blow any opposition out of the water, both in terms of any transfer fee and wages and we're clearly not in a position to do that. Dc will be trying to gets his business done as early as possible and I like the business done so far. I fear things will drag on late in to the window unfortunately! I agree a minimum of two strikers is required - Lyle Taylor and Telford would be good and give good balance. Two physical strikers and two smaller, poacher types on the books. A fifth, if required, should come from the development squad in the event of an injury crisis etc.

On the basis that Ronaldo is too old, we had better get rid of 80% of the fanbase then!

Still early in terms of players being out of contract! Plenty wanting top dollar in the first few weeks out of contract - DC will wait until the end of June/ beginning of July when mortgages needs paying! Wages will then become more realistic! It's all about the money! UTG!

Unfortunately for a lot of signings we're dependant on other clubs also doing their business early or the 30th of June milestone when players contracts elapse.
I agree with the observation that our seasons do always start slow and I think that is in part due to late signings.

Goes to show how little money comes through the turnstiles compared to other income streams. Could offer Iniesta the money received from the extra STs sold when he's announced. Even 2k tickets of various price ranges would only get him 500k
