Still plenty of permutations but if Germany are to finish second in their group would the best outcome v Belgium be a draw? Pick up one booking to end up tied on goal difference, head to head, goals scored and fair play. We can bemoan our luck at losing the toss of a coin but have a potentially far easier route to the semi finals !!!!!! If we are good enough, we are good enough. The World Cup is about building momentum and confidence. Planning to draw (or even lose) is not congruent with that. I would like to see both England and Belgium going for it, we need to have a proper game as the last two (if we are honest) weren't particularly competitive. What has traditionally happened to England is that they qualify so easily for the tournament that when they get there they are shocked that they cannot 'cruise it. Let's have some good comparative games. I wasn't implying the team should seek to contrive a result as both sides will be totally professional and setting out to win. But from a fans perspective it's interesting to look at what the various match outcomes will mean in terms of our schedule. With both having qualified it's quite an interesting scenario and watching the match will be quite strange - I bet the TV stations will be flashing up an "As it stands table" and "As it stands next fixture" every time there is a goal or even a red/yellow card.

Both teams already qualified, can see if being 1-0, 2-1 either way.
Don't see the point about wanting to finish 2nd so Brazil/Germany can be avoided in the quarters, if we're serious about winning it then we'll have to face that calibre of opposition at some point anyway.

Its just nice to have an exciting young hungry team to watch again. A team that is being managed properly. Of course we could easily still get beaten by a team such as Colombia in the next round but everything appears to be going in the right direction. Especially with the youth teams doing so well last couple of years. Of course, they just need to get some game time either in the premier league, or elsewhere. But the future is bright, and who knows how far we can go say in four years time? ....,”or elsewhere?” Are you thinking of a something like a real cup competition against lower league clubs? 😉

England can go all the way along with a few others, very wide open this tournament. It'll be who performs on the day.
I personally think they'll make the semi's. Then who knows. Plenty of teams who have underperformed so far but if they sneak through will get stronger...ze Germans in particular, who although on th face of it are struggling haven't played bad footy ta be fair.
Very impressed with th england attacking players Sterling (yes him too) , Kane, and few teams will handle Lingard on this form. And with possibly yer best man ta come back (Ali) looking very strong. However - Defensively th jury's still out.

Not sure I agree. Portugal’s route to the final of the Euros in 2016 was as follows: Iceland Austria Hungary Croatia Wales Then they sneaked a nervy final. A good draw can take you a long way in these competitions. If you have to beat a team like Germany in a bruising encounter in the quarters, say, that can leave its mark physically on the squad. People talk about momentum but if coming second gives us a better chance we should be professional enough to play the reserves and go in well rested in the next round.

I would normally agree with comments like " if we want to win we'll have to play the best teams at some point" but with England I'd rather leave it as late as possible. I'm not sure we have the mentality to beat top sides when it matters yet, we always seem in awe and fearful of the 'big sides' and find ourselves sitting back and being dominated. I would prefer to have an easy ish ride to the quarters and then take what comes from there. Before the tournament started was anyone expecting us to go far? A morale boosting Q/F for a young, inexperienced squad will be a good building block for the next few tournaments - anything more is a massive bonus.

There's a good chance if we draw we'll finish top anyway, no chance we're losing to deliberately finish 2nd!

It really is too complicated to even attempt to work out who we may face later. We only get to meet Germany if they finish top of their group, and we finish second....or visa versa ! At the moment, Germany could finish top, or they may still not even qualify ! They play South Korea, who although they have lost twice, can still qualify !
Tournament football is totally different to a normal season. Momentum is everything.

Good Lord....Hugo, my account must have been hi-jacked! That combination of words just could not have come from my fingertips! I demand an investigation.
