Darrell Clarke says the quality of his current Bristol Rovers squad, which he is still looking to improve, is reflected in the fact he is having to fight off interest in his players. Bristol Rovers have so far made five signings this transfer window, bringing in Alex Rodman, Theo Widdrington, Sam Matthews, Ed Upson and Gavin Reilly - all as free agents, with just Rory Gaffney leaving for Salford outside of those released at the end of the season.
But manager Clarke admitted he has been getting enquiries about some of his players.
He said: “I don’t want to go into it too much because that is between the clubs.
“We certainly want to keep all our best players.
“I am turning down offers for our players, they are going to be wanted because I have got good players at the football club now.
"You couldn’t give them away three or four years ago could you? But now we have got good players.
“Everyone has got their price, that is the reality of football. Most clubs have got their price and sometimes when players see that golden carrot at the end of it, and massive pay rises which we can’t live with, it is the right time to say goodbye to players; which is unfortunate because we want to build things here and kick on.”
Clarke made no suggestion there would be an imminent player departures.
“Everyone has got their price, that is the reality of football." This sounded a bit ominous...

Bye, bye Ellis. And possibly Lockyer?

Every player is always for sale, even when their not. Phillipe Coutinho wasn’t for sale...
In other words, we ain’t selling, but for a big sum where we maybe able to buy one or even 3 replacements to give us strength and depth as well as a replacement for the departed player then the offer will be accepted.
Of course if a player knows a bigger club is bidding and doubles his wages then we have no choice but to negotiate a price.
DC is no mug, it’s likely we will keep everyone he wants until at least Jan just to see where we are.

As I said, Blackburn have been scouting Ellis for a while and have bid £750k plus add ons.
They know he is out of contract next summer so they will probably come back in again for him in January looking to get him on the cheap.

Sounds to me like he is just trying to make sure we don't sound cheap like he did with saying Taylor was worth £10mil.

In this situation you tell Ellis that if he signs a new deal, you will accept improved offers for him which will allow us to get more for him, a bit like what Lambert did. I'm not terribly concerned at this point, DC says this every summer transfer window and the two players in question who are subject to bids (Ellis + Lockyer) hopefully owe the club for giving them a chance in football having been with us for many years. I can't see them walking away for nothing à la Bodin and Taylor though I might be wrong.

Maybe but I was thinking that perhaps his age, the fact he’s only been here a year and him moving here to be close to his family might mean that he won’t move this summer. He’s a fantastic player but I would be more suprised to see him leave than I would see Lockyer/Harrison depart.

I suppose this is a fact of life in League 1 and below where we are all selling clubs. Everyone has their price as they do in the PL as Liverpool found with Coutinho and Chelsea might find with Hazzard. Just different levels and expectations. Glad DC has done some work getting a few midfielders in. That he hasn’t done much in terms of CHs tell me Tom L probably staying for the moment but we’ve got a month to go. As ever time will tell. UTG!
