Sky Sports News have reported that Stoke's Xherdan Shaqiri has just signed for Liverpool. Seems he had a release clause that enabled him to leave should a bid of £13.5m be received which, conveniently enough, was exactly what Liverpool paid.
So maybe Rovers weren't that naive when Matty Taylor left on the trigger of a similar clause. Bigger clubs than us can also fall foul of a player's demands. I don't know if this was the case or not, but it's not hard to imagine a similar scenario whereby he wouldn't have signed a deal with Stoke without that get out. Sure, £13.5m is a lot more than £300k but it would probably still be seen as getting a player on the cheap, given he is a regular international.
Personally I don't particularly rate him and wonder where he will fit in to the Liverpool side.
Apologies if this isn't seen as Rovers related, in which case please feel free to move it elsewhere. I just thought the comparison was quite interesting and that maybe fans should stop saying that we were weak in our contract negotiations.

No doubting Shaqiri's talent but I don't think he is a great team player and a bit lazy. Makes me sick to see him join someone like Liverpool acter being a lazy sh**e for Stoke during their relegation last season.

I think WBA has several players with release clauses written into their contracts if they were relegated. Jonny Evans can go for £3m, Rondon can also go for a really low fee. I suppose it could be seen that the club is screwed over it but I guess it’s also a bit of protection for the clubs in that they get higher earners off the books before going into the Championship. I think some clubs who are often fighting relegation will be forced by players and agents that they will only sign with a release clause but on the flip side some clubs will put in their own clauses about lower salaries if they are relegated. So I would imagine the whole clause insertion issue is pretty normal practice for clubs. And let’s face it the agents will not be slow at letting clubs know what their release clause is for any of their players. It’s why MTs exit from us was not that surprising. It was who he went to and it being right at the end of the window thereby making it hard for us to replace that annoyed the fans. (But let’s not open that can of worms again!!) UTG!

With Salah, Firmino and Mane in a front three it’s hard to see him as first choice. But teams in the Champions league need a big squad and with games coming thick and fast in Sept and October and again in March and April I’m sure he’ll get chances to play and I suppose he wants to win medals and that looks more likely with Liverpool. I have the same feeling about Mahrez going to Man City. Is he going to replace Sterling or Sane? Perhaps he’ll get more chances and again wants to win things. I think that all these big clubs know that they need to strengthen their squads even when they look very strong even when they have won leagues because none of these clubs look to stand still. They always want to “strengthen” their squads. Perhaps it keeps everyone on their toes. Chelsea last year didn’t strengthen particularly well, if at all, and they did stand still in a way and finished 5th, out of the Champions League and now Conte has gone. A lesson perhaps. UTG!

You may be right, but statistically he had a solid season. 36 starts, 8 goals, 7 assists. That means he either scored or assisted in 15 out of their 35 league goals, which is pretty impressive. Whether he fits Liverpool’s system and pressing style is another thing, though. Sounds like a JJOT situation.

Agreed, I can't see him working hard enough for Klopp, and he always comes across as a bit of a Prima Donna (á là JJOT), Stoke suited him because he was by far their star player, won't be the case at Liverpool. That said he's probably on a better wage and will be a squad player at least so, if they win anything, he'll get a medal.
