I'm not really sure when it happened.
Was it when we came back to Bristol in 1996 after a ten year exile? Maybe it was when we were relegated to the fourth tier for the first time? Perhaps it was when the unthinkable happened after that fateful game against Mansfield.
At what point did the Twerton Spirit die?
I've only contributed to this forum for a year or so, but have supported Rovers since my Dad took me to my first game in April 1977. Plymouth away. 1-1 draw. Now I take great delight in taking my son to games. In that 41 years, the club we all love has faced far greater problems than it faces today. The South Stand fire, playing at Ashton Gate, forced out of our spiritual home, playing in Bath, relegation to the fourth tier and then the Conference, both of which were firsts in the club's history.
I don't know whether it's the fact that the forum and other social media gives the platform for views that were always there, or whether we're just more impatient these days. Whatever. What I do know is that the club survived these times and sometimes even thrived in adversity. The Twerton years for example were undoubtedly the best years I've had watching the Gas.
And we're doing it again. Whatever some of us feel about the problems we do face at present, we are thriving following adversity. It was just five seasons ago that we dropped into non league. Just five seasons. We could have been like Torquay, who went with us, or Stockport, or Hereford who went before. Yet since then, we've been promoted twice and consolidated back at our historic level, whilst enjoying a team who give everything week in week out and are led by arguably the greatest manager we have ever had. These really ain't bad times.
There are questions that people are justified in wanting answers on. Of course there are. Despite some of my posts, I do know that not every single thing is perfect at our club! The vast majority of posters on this forum are able to construct their opinions on this forum in a sensible, level fashion. I particularly enjoy reading the opinions of Wareham Gas, Socrates, Daniel300380, Blue Butterfly and Contradiction, to name just a few. Conversely, I may not always agree with them, but the likes of Pirate and SteveK192 are also able to put their points across with rationale. Even Midland Gas, whose opinions on DC I could never agree with if I live to be 100, is able to provide rationale for his (admittedly wrong!!) opinions. That's great. It's how a forum should be. People with differing views debating matters about the club we all love.
What I can't understand though is why there are a number of posters who seem to take pleasure in bashing the club and the personnel within it at every opportunity. We've seen comments stating that our club is s**t. Our club. Statements made in print, presumably in the heat of the moment, by people claiming to be Rovers supporters. We have to have pride in our club. This is exactly the sort of cr*p that we've always accuses City fabs of. Where's your pride in our club?
Some of the comments have been full of vitriol or are just views on a given topic that clearly have no basis in proven fact. It seems that's OK if it helps to make a point and allow the author to take delight in being able to say I told you so when something goes wrong.
This would not have happened in the Twerton years. Despite the club being in a far worse position at that time, the fans pulled together and supported the club. Out of that came success we couldn't havè imagined at the time.
Here's an idea then. How about we do what we are here to do in our role as supporters. We support. It's nit difficult. That doesn't mean not questioning when things aren't quite right. But it does mean cutting the personal abuse and taking time to back up views with constructive and reasoned rationale. Perhaps then we can retrieve some of that missing Twerton Spirit and make this a better forum for those views.
Unfortunately, I suspect that's an unrealistic pipedream and I will get nothing but abuse for daring to suggest such a thing. So, I'm off for a while. Here's hoping that Darrell gets the no 9s he wants and we become the team and ckub that I'd like to think that we all want.
