It’s been doom and gloom recently and rightly so but ahead of the first game of the season and after finally capturing some strikers my optimism returned. After having watched football for 25 years now, I should have known better than to let my heart rule my head but we are football fans and this is what drives us to keep going through thick and thin. The hope, the but what if I miss a magical moment, the expectation, the passion and just being at HOME and away from normal sh**ty life stuff.
We parked up nice and early and after being mildly excited by the sight of a new home bargains down muller road being developed, it then soon dawned on me that my parking space was soon to be no more and even more traffic on this wonderful stretch of road each matchday. Just another downer for my rovers supporting journey at present but it was easily shaken off with the optimism of the impending feast of football!
Arrived at the ground and was very underwhelmed by our new electronic turnstiles, I had hoped for so much more. It’s laughable but technically an upgrade I guess. After hearing of the price rises and being put off of purchasing my usual cheese and onion pasty and coke, I took my usual position in the blackthorn and waited with anticipation, looking around me at what changes may have taken place. Not a lot was the overall answer and the missing Guinness tent stand was strange but credit where credit is due the pitch is definitely the best I have ever seen us have! Before the players came out it looked immaculate! A few more sponsors around the ground were gazed upon - mintbet have a few- wonder why? 😂
The warm up takes place and I can see the back four preparing - I’m not impressed whatsoever at the selection but hey ho come on gas!
PA wise the new chaps alright and not grating which is good but he wasn’t Nick Day - the voice of my rovers supporting life bar the first few years as a kid down Twerton park. He didn’t welcome the new boys rather than just read their names when doing the teams which disappointed me as it’s always nice to welcome a newbie.
Anyhow game on and let’s not concede another early goal- 6 mins in and after separating the tides of rovers non existent midfield the Stanley players are at our leaky shaking defence the ball magnetically drops to someone and yes of course he scores! FFS why don’t I just listen to my head and save the feeling of damn and have one of I told you so! Anyway let’s get back in this boys!!
Wasn’t impressed by many of our lot today but Rodman had caught my eye with his nice footwork, touch and dribbling ability. He looked a threat so DC took him off so the others didn’t rub off on him too much ahead of the next game as we were woeful and let Nichols join them.
To be fair to him Stefan Payne was working his nuts off alone up top! Throwing himself into challenges - something he may need to watch - and running after lost causes and showing his strength giving Stanley something to think about. Out of nowhere like Randy Orton from
WWE a cross gets flung in and Payne nods it in! He deserved a decent chance for his efforts and showed he can finish unlike some. 1-1!!! We’re we really going to blag a point out of this? The answer followed in the last minute of the game! No. Either good play, a soft midfield and back line or maybe a mix of both lead Accrington to seemingly cut is apart and the chap nonchalantly passes it in the corner like Thierry blooming Henry! Disaster here we go again! I’m going home! The end! I don’t think ill bother with Crawley until that optimism kicks in again of course 😜! UTG and enjoy your weekend peeps! 💙💙💙
