I've just listened to the post match interview of the Portsmouth Assistant Manager, Joe Gallen after last night's game. Overall pretty fair and not an unreasonable take on the game. A couple of things caught my attention, relating to the penalty incident and Lines' sending off. In both cases Gallen didn't pass too much judgement on what he actually saw, but referred to the players reactions.
In the case of the penalty, he referred to the lack of complaint from the Portsmouth players.
With the sending off, he intimated that the Portsmouth players' reaction may have helped to sway the referee's decision.
At the start of last season, The FA reminded clubs and players that they could face sanctions (most likely club charges and fines) if two or more players confronted a match official. I've noticed how little Rovers react or complain to referees, whilst also noticing that several of our more street-wise opponents make it their mission to question the referees and seem to get more from the officials as a result.
There was as much 'excessive force' in Thompson's cynical foul when Kyle Bennett was breaking free, as Lines foul. Possibly even worse because it was clearly premeditated. But there was little complaint from Rovers, yellow card issued and we got on with it.
You might applaud our corinthian spirit, but I think we need to seek every advantage we can and get in the ear of the referee more often.

I'd rather lose than see us cheat. It wouldnt work if the refs were strong in what they believed happened

I'd rather lose than see us cheat. Who said anything about cheating? This is the professional game and we've all seen that many successful teams at this level know how to 'play' the ref. Through my admittedly jaundiced eye, Lines' sending off only occurred because Portsmouth reacted so vehemently. FFS, Lee Brown ran further than I saw him in 300 games for Rovers to add his weight to the argument. We need to wise up in my opinion.

From the highlights reel I don’t think it was that bad a challenge. Didn’t seem to be two footed or with excessive force.

I couldn't really tell at the time from the Thatcher's end, but the video shows both players lunging for the ball. Using the guidelines: Careless - yes Reckless - Probably With Excessive Force - I can't see it. I felt at the time that the ref got caught up in the emotion of the moment and was influenced by the Portsmouth player's reactions. I stand by that having seen the video.

Was sat in the East Stand and level with the sending off. I thought it was a clear red card. Similar to the Vardy sending off on Saturday. It was excessive imo. UTG!

The problem with that argument is the same player did just that last season and ended up with his marching orders.

I think one of the problems with Lines red card was Lines reaction to the tackle/foul
Yes 2 players going for the ball
Yes Pompey players reacted and got at the referee
But if you look back at it, Lines was immediately holding his hand up and apologising/trying to condole/dissipate the situation
I don't think this helped the situation either as looks like an admission of guilt on his part for the foul
But looking back at it slowly on the highlights it looks like Lines actually gets the ball first but his follow through onto the Portsmouth lad was bad
We'll see what happens but from the sound of it I don't think we'll be appealing it.

Actually looking back again, i think Lines didn't get the ball first....! :-D
But still think a little harsh for a straight red
camera angles for replays are poor though and the ref was right on the spot so had a better view

The crowd should be influencing the ref! I'll bet we see a few tackles like that against us away from home and the ref lets it go. I think we were hard done by not cus of the reaction but because usually home advantage counts for something. Not against the big boys obviously...

I'd rather lose than see us cheat. Thing is they don't even call it cheating now, it seems that influencing the referee in your favour through any means is fair game these days.
