Certainly no longer. It pretty much puts to bed those who say that DS haven't been here long enough to actually build anything. Pompey’s new owners haven’t actually built anything either though? Yeah they’ve made improvements but so have ours. OP made it sound like they had built a training ground...

Obviously it's not great, but what's the problem with an open terrace if it's not raining? Surely you have a better view from the side too. It's elevated and there are no obstructing pillars. I'd much rather have a near full Mem than a half empty all seater like half the teams in League 1!

Depends what you'd rather have really. Fans that have been going down for a fair few years would far prefer a tatty and dilapidated Mem or Fratton, to characterless holes such as the Bescot, Colchester, MK Dons or Shrewsbury, but those grounds rarely get slagged off in reports, as it's what the millennial fans want, to sit in peace in quiet, in a sterile environment, and clap politely.
Ninian Park or the Cardiff City Stadium? The Vetch or The Liberty? The Baseball Ground or Pride Park?
Obvious really isn't it, but soulless bowls would seem to be classed as progress.

Because they bring in more money. I love the memorial ground for the atmosphere and because I like standing but if we stay there we won’t realise the potential our clubs got. It’s not only down to the stadium but the stadium is the Center piece of what we need to do as a club to even stay in league 1 let alone get to the championship. Imagine if we win promotion to the championship in a 20,000 capacity modern stadium with a good training facilities. We could establish ourselves there. Now imagine promotion to the championship at the Mem. One season maybe two of relegation scraps and we’d be relegated. I don’t like soulless bowls anymore than you but if we want to ever become a decent 2 nd flight club again we need to have a decent stadium and decent training facilities or it’s just not going to happen. It’s not like it was in the 70 and 80s Part of me wishes it was but it isn’t.

It's over simplifying things massively to suggest that our success is based solely on a new, characterless, concrete bowl. As we all know, Rovers never seem to do things the easy way, with constant issues going on behind the scenes, and there is so much more to sort out other than a new ground.
Bournemouth and Brentford, as much smaller clubs than ourselves, have shown that success can be achieved with very limited resources ground wise, whilst Coventry, Leeds, Sunderland, Southampton, and much more disastrously Torquay and Darlington, are evidence that new, or extensively refurbished grounds, are not the automatic key to success that everybody seems to think they are.
Maybe when safe standing is permitted in newly built stadia, more thought will go into the construction of these grounds, so that fans don't have to completely forfeit their enjoyable Saturday experience, just to be 'guaranteed' a bit of success.

Agree with most of that but I never said it would guarantee us success I said it would give us a better chance. And it would wouldn’t it.

We only like it because we have it though and we know it. If you got your pick of all the league 1 stadiums to have you wouldn't choose it would you? It would I reckon be right near the bottom on most people's list. I love the term soulless bowl, I think of it every morning when finishing my Weetabix. I think of just how soulless a half full Wembley stadium was when Manse scored that penalty.

The library remains a library still though
