When I was in my later teens, I used to go to Twerton to watch the Rovers. Me and my mates used to meet at the Carpenters Arms for a few then drive, I mean get a cab, to Bath have a few more and watch the Gas. Win or lose, rain or shine. We won some lost some, that's football. We sang and cheered and dometimes had a scuffle after all, we were young. But it was the highlight of thr week. We would spend the week chatting about the game and the result we hoped for.
When did it turn into expecting so much, hating so much ? I don't understand. We've never had much have we ? in fact, the past few Years have been some of the best but because of a foreign owner so much is expected.
It seems like a lot of forum members don't like Rovers and when I say Rovers if means everything. Why go then ? To moan and criticise ? I try to be light hearted on here but there is so much sh**. Yes I know we fans have the right to complain but we take it to the next level. We moan about everything.
We talk about the spirit of the past but it's our spirit that's changed as I believe the club and players are trying.

I think it's because many people have had enough and don't see why things should be the same as they were thirty years ago. Rovers really are being left behind, and the worry is that eventually we will be so far behind that we'll just disappear. The Mem needs knocking down and re-development, but that's never going to happen because the financial returns are just not there. A few more tents and 50p on a Sausage Roll are not going to realistically improve income, nor improve DC's budget, and anyone thinking it will are being conned. The club has no plan, and therefore, no future as things stand. The spirit of the fans is still there, but they are seeing nothing coming back from the owners. How is the field in South Glos coming along?

I have two theories:
1. We live in the age of instant gratification. Internet access means you have the wealth of human knowledge at your fingertips now, whilst a couple of decades ago we either lived in ignorance or struggled long and hard for snip-its of that knowledge. Benevolent algoritms on Football Manager, mean that you can take a fictional team from National League South to Champions League in 6 short seasons and this expectation gets translated into 'entitled fans' that expect on-pitch performance to match on-screen.
2. There have always been a moaning bunch of old b@stards who follow Rovers, just like every other club. We just like to pretend that there was somehow, sometime a different spirit that prevailed at our plucky, rag-bag club.
Given the age profile of most of the moaners that we have on here, I'm tending toward the latter.

With social media, people can moan about anything & everything.
Like you I started out at Bath, then we just had our mates to moan too, now though people can tell the whole world how bad they think we are.
If you have a look, it'll be the same people moaning about everything, you can generally tell on here who are the WUMS, and who you can take seriously with their gripes.
Some people seem to think we have some sense of entitlement, because we get OK crowds, and we took 40K to Wembley!!!
I know who take to take seriously, and who are the WUMS on here.

30 years ago we could compete with the Teds.
In 30 years time, unless things change at Rovers we won't exist.
If they make it to the Prem before we even put a portacabin on our field we are f**ked.
What kid is going to chose us over them?

I know so many "neutrals" who have been there and rave about their ground and have become at least armchair teds. Genuinely concerned about our future now more than I ever have been.

What kid is going to chose us over them? [b Exactly this ^^^^ If / when city get into the prem , I genuinely believe without a shadow of a doubt our days will be numbered. It pains me to say it infact it near enough breaks my heart that my lad , who has been coming to games with me since he was 7 years old , no longer attends games with me or even with his mates ( he’s 14 now ) as he has just lost interest. I ask him why ? His reply is , he just wants to watch football in a proper stadium and not a dump ! The younger supporters of our club will lose interest if things don’t change in regards to our ground or long term ambition, the worst thing is , I think a lot of the kids will turn to the dark side as let’s be honest , on paper they are a much bigger attraction than we are. Looking at it from a neutral prospective and you were unaware of the history of both teams in Bristol , it’s quite obvious that we will not be the choice. It’s worrying times at the moment as they are getting further and further ahead of us.

I’m 33 now and rather than keep regretting everything - maybe I should do my coaching badges. In today’s game without professional experience though it just seems pointless and very hard to achieve with a young family to support. For the first few years my thoughts mirrored DC and I was very happy with him but our opinions now differ and I think personally he’s lost his way a bit as his mind was focusing on offield activities! He can get it back but I’m just frustrated at the mistakes we’ve made- there’s no quick fix and to be fair the board a massively to blame too! Onwards and upwards! UTG!

It is a great shame what Okebournegas has to say about younger supporters . I still get older supporters say to me why do we have to have a new stadium as we have survived using poor facilities in the past. But when we were at Eastville or even Twerton a lot of the other teams bigger than us had old dated facilities , like Chelsea with their terrace and sheds, Sunderland Charlton and many others had grounds with wide open terraces shed and a mishmash of stands. They have all moved on and virtually all the teams in the two divisions above us have new or rebuilt stadiums. Even small clubs like Shrewsbury and Chesterfield who I used to look down to now have new stadiums. We are loosing ground to these teams every year and something needs to be done. Wael paid off the Wonga loan, covered our debt and bought the training ground he is a millionaire but from AJIB accounts I have seen he probably has no more money than previous owners. I think he hoped for backing from the rest of the family but hasn't got it. I just wish he would be honest and tell us exactly what is happening at least then we would know where we stand.

I think the OP was asking why everyone feels inclined to moan, not actually asking us to moan.
But, any excuse, I guess.

I think a lot of the moaning all comes down to the stadium... or lack of. It’s like a little lad being promised in June he’ll get a new scalextric set for Christmas only to wake up Xmas morning to find you’ve been given just a second hand matchbox car. Repeat yr after yr. To top it off the kid down the road you hate has got the present that you wanted and gloats constantly,

I was one of the many that cheered as Wael was carried down the Glos Road. However, sadly, my trust in them has largely evaporated. To learn of the UWE collapse through Facebook, the promise of state of the art training facilities to an overgrown empty field and the continual selling of our best players and very little ambition in the transfer market We are the same old rag bag Rovers. My mate is also in his 50s and he believes they have a master plan, so age is not the issue, just the way you perceive what is happening.

I would greatly appreciate it if Wael opened up and told us the plan he has in mind and whether he has concrete financial backing from the rest of his family who are involved. What we have so far is an uneasy degree of confidence as to how safe our Club is and vague aspirations for the future. It would be helpful and perhaps comforting for us if we knew exactly how we stand and if our hopes are to be dashed by that disclosure. I believe many of us would want to know. It seems that we are being teased with the prospect of jam tomorrow and this is what has kept many onside but also caused the unending speculation. Will any of this jam stick to us? It is common for companies to have short to medium to long term plans for all to see, so why can't Bristol Rovers?

The sad thing is that 92% ownership usually gives some great benefits, especially in decision making & simplicity for investment / finances. Very worrying if these positives can't at least be harnessed.
