Great to get the three points and a little luck at last! It was one of those games where no one was particularly brilliant but no one was dire. A real team effort, reminiscent of the conference season.
I think it's going to be like this until at least Jan but probably all season, just scrabbling points week by week. Fair play to the lads for keeping their heads up after the run of poor form and toxic atmosphere round the club.
Standout players for me were Bonham and Craig who we would have surely lost the game without. Matthews was good again and Nichols was unlucky and about 0.2 seconds away from breaking his duck for the second.

Will not try to do a report, and look forward to reading Steves later, but I want to say that experiment bordered on inept. The formation, playing Ollie in a 10 style role, against a team who were dreadful and below us in the table. DC I have been your biggest fan, you have been beyond criticism from me, but that was a joke. After 20-25 mins he switched Sercs over from Clarke into the defensive midfield pairing with Upson. I actually felt for Nicholls, he worked hard and actually looked better, but what could he do up there without support.
I am sure in training our skilful and tricky small midfielder's look amazing, holding the ball, passing to each other and running rings around the stiffs, creating tap ins, almost 5 a-side style. But in a competitive league game against big opposition fighting for everything, completely different story. Wimbledon were not a good side, but they were better than us, played better football as well. With a proper 4-4-2 or even 3-5-2 with our first choice 11 (whatever that is no one knows, and I'm gutted to think DC doesn't either) we should hammer teams like this. I don't fall into the camp that our transfers aren't good enough, there is stacks of ability in this squad. I am beginning to worry, DC needs to get the spine sorted, keeper tick, defensive tick (ish), now midfield and attack. If he wants to play Ollie and Tom, fine stick with it and put the rest of the formation into place with balance, play the players where they are supposed to play, get some confidence and start creating, attacking and scoring. Simple hey!?

I said on another thread 4 points from these two home games after all the negativity would be good, and it is. Esp with two clean sheets against teams in a similar position to us. I think Graham Coughlin the defensive coach must be doing a good job with the stats around about our defence. Yes we rode our luck a bit but in the end it was another clean sheet. Saturday a big test to overcome before I think any corners have been turned, but credit where credits due. Well done the team and D.C. UTG! |

Fair enough Wareham. I am just starting to worry that DC is beginning to feel cornered and the pressure is causing him to be so negative. He isn't the most attacking coach, but relies on formations over individualism, I worry as playing Ollie as a support to loan striker is madness, surely? I rate OC, crunching tackles, and he does have a great strike, but coming from defensive midfield. But agree the 3 points were crucial, lucky but who cares about that. If we get a result on Saturday I think DC will start to express again (here is hoping as I don't want him to go).

Hmm, I still have an issue praising the defence in a game where Appiah (?) missed an open goal unmarked from literally yards out, amongst other clear-cut chances. Clean sheet yes, but more luck than judgement. I cannot remember a DC side that has opposition fans saying how poor we are more than this season. You just hope there are enough worse teams than us come the end of the season.

It also allowed us to finally play with two strikers up top. Nichols actually won a header and combined well with Jakubiak to create a chance. |

Yeah, I have a theory that Bonham isn't a keeper at all. He just a kid who found a magic lamp, and when the genie asked him what he wanted, he said 'I want to be the luckiest keeper in the world for the full 90 minutes.' |

I think you have to be a little sensible here and look at the current situation we find ourselves in. We are fragile on confidence and were desperate for a win regardless of the performance. Wimbledon are a physical, long ball team and were bound to pump balls in the box at any opportunity near the end. It therefore made sense to have 3 centre halves in the box to defend crosses/long balls instead of 2. Especially seeing as Craig and Lockyer aren't the biggest cbs going. |

I dragged the misses away from watching the Great British Bake off last night for her debut Gas match, at time I wish we had stayed in as Paul Hollywood slated a baker for not producing a flake enough Pain Au Chocolat.
At the moment, every game is scrappy and far from convincing. We were incredibly lucky with our goals and to not have conceded any as they hit the post and a goal disallowed.
Defensively I would now say we are fairly solid, our -2 Goal difference would also suggest that considering we don't score many.
I looked at last night team sheet with promise, the players I hoped were starting were named, yet they failed to really get going again. It may be a confidence thing right now, but all the players in front of the back 4 and gk need to step and show some character.
The atmosphere at the mem is friendly, but almost non existent, not many people sing around me, the Thatcher end sing when we conceded a goal which baffles me. I hope that games pick up and people get a bit noisier, sing/chant regularly.
We have to take last nights win as something to build on, need to look to beat team though, not look to not lose games.

I know there is a bit of a love in going on with Tom Nichols at the moment, but to me he just seems too lightweight. Defenders just seem to brush him off with ease. I know the service is often poor, but as a striker you have to try to make things happen. There was one example in the first half where we got free on the right. Rather than him attacking the six yard box looking to score he stood around on the edge of the area. Bloody gamble. Ball gets crossed in, no one there. He has some nice touches, but 2 in 60 says it all for me. We have to find someone up top who can score regularly.

I think we have realized by watching the other options, that he is perhaps the only one with Reilly that put the effort in. Payne doesn't seem to be very fit at all, not even half the player he was looking opening game of the season. Jakubiak seems quite lazy or shy on the pitch, not demanding or winning the ball. What can DC do until January? If he has the money given to him, i would be demanding the board to pay whats required for a striker that is banging them in the league below and let Jakubiak go back to Watford if he doesn't start performing. If we dont sort out the attacking option in January we are going to be in the sh**, preferably get the player(s) in as early as possible, none of this waiting around. |
