My first matches were at Eastville early to mid eighties. My best XI whilst trying to avoid to much blinkered nostalgia is, Martyn Smith, Yates, Tillson, Jones Bodin, Holloway, Hibbitt, Walters Penrice & Stewart (Had to be Smith & Jones at fullback!) Reading the earlier posts is a good reminder of the great players who have dropped down the divisions and played for us over the years - Cooper, Ball, Hibbitt, Francis, Channon, Gould, Walters. There must be more? David Hillier? Haha! Ball, Hibbitt and Francis though. So much quality there. And like everyone who watched him, loved Wally in the quarters. I remember Channon putting 3000 on the gate at Eastville only to sit on the bench all night.

Oddly enough we've enjoyed reasonable success in past few years (this season excluded) but not many from the current era featuring Any team with Jason Roberts in it for me , ,! And Walters was different class even in his twilight As good as it's been these past few years few of our players have been championship or top six league one quality like those of 1990-2000, I think there was also more quality in some of Trollopes teams.

What about an England full cap 11 from those who’ve played for Rovers. Nigel Martin Terry Cooper Larry Lloyd Gary Mabbutt ? Alan Ball Mick Channon Gerry Francis ? Geoff Bradford Rickie Lambert As you can see I’m struggling for another midfielder and a full back, I’m sure others will know possibilities. UTG! John Scales?

And Walters was different class even in his twilight Without wishing to start the debate about DC all over again, I wonder if the lack of top quality players he's had is an indication of his great ability as a manager. He's made the most of what he's had. Either way, there's some cracking teams in this thread. Every one of them would walk this league and most the next. If only...

Sadly they'd beat our current eleven even with only nine players, even allowing for fitness levels!

Different slant. Players I've actually seen, circa 1980: BRISTOL BORN. Phil Kite Ian Davies. Stuart Taylor. Steve Yates. Gary Mabbutt Jamie Shore. Ian Holloway. Mickey Barrett. Jamie Cureton. Marcus Stewart. Gary Penrice. Tim Carter. Steve White. Nicky Tanner . Phil Purnell. Danny Coles. Chris Lines. Scott Sinclair. Scott Sinclair was born in Bath. Sorry to be pedantic.

It's probably been done before, but in an attempt to move away from the doom and gloom (even after a win FFS), hows about we be a bit more upbeat and name the best Rovers side you have seen in your time supporting them. Just name your side in whatever formation you like, but maybe let us know the years spent watching the Gas at the same time. My ball, so I'll start with... 1977-2018 Martyn. Alexander, Yates, Mabbutt, Jones(c). Walters, Holloway, D Williams, Barrett. Hayles, Stewart. Subs: Parkin, Tilson, Shore, Astafjevs, Penrice, Lambert, Randall. Manager: Tough call between Gerry Francis and Darrell Clarke. Can't decide. Happy with either! Since ive been watching in a 1-1-8 formation Gk Martyn Df Tillson Mf Walters St Stewart St Hayles St Ellington St Roberts St Cureton St Lambert St Taylor (Gareth) St Taylor (Matty)
